The time jump was about 6 years btw, and I’m pretty sure yall are gonna love the rest of S9, Rick might be somewhere else but the show does NOT get worse I promise 🙏

Also, viewers watching the show at the time knew going in this was Rick's final episode. We were also given news immediately after the episode aired in Nov. 2018 that there would be a future trilogy of movies where Andrew Lincoln would return as Rick Grimes. It was also announced right after this episode, that 9.5 had also served as Maggie's last on screen episode. So aside from everything that followed, that was where we were at the time of this episode airing - just where these guys are now.

You also need to keep in mind that they (Gimple) announced immediately after Rick's final episode aired that Andrew Lincoln would be returning for a movie trilogy. We all now know how that played out, especially with COVID in there, the TWD's ending and other spinoff shots, but that was the hope provided in the moment of watching this show at the time.

I will go ahead to be the first and say without watching the video yet, but this was Rick's last episode in The Walking Dead. His and Jadis' story continues on another series.
