Webcomics Handbook cartoon

One of my New Year's Resolutions is to complete the second edition of my how-to book, The Webcomics Handbook. Mind you, that was last year's resolution, too. And — ahem — the year before that.

But hope springs eternal, so here I am... at it again. One of the things the book desperately needs is more cartoons to illustrate the pages. Not coincidentally, I'm experimenting with mirroring my Webcomics.com posts on Substack. And that platform has an excellent promo package that rewards good visuals.

So... the plan is to work on the book one chapter at a time. (I may release each chapter as a standalone eBook, as an incentive to keep me focused.) As I'm doing that, I'm working on cartoons I can use for those chapters as they come up in my publishing schedule for Webcomics.com/Substack. By September or so, I may even be ready to release the second edition of the Webcomics Handbook in print.

Meanwhile, whenever the cartoon seems like something that would translate to a general audience, I'll post them here as well.

I keep hoping that I will be able to leave enough kindling around to light a passionate fire in one of my two kids. They both sorta doodle/draw, but to have them work towards something while I am still paying most of their expenses and to have them having created something to prove to themselves they can is the dream. A book that speaks to them, happens to be just the words they need at the right moment… worth more than its weight in gold should it kick off that passion. Dated or not.

That was “How To Make Webcomic.” And you’re right. It’s pretty obsolete. It was written before social media was developed! A few years after it came out, I wrote “The Webcomics Handbook,” which I wrote alone. It was about 300 pages to the original’s 200. And it updated much of what the original wasn’t able to cover. The book I’m referring to in today’s post would be the second edition to the “Handbook.”

I bought the book written by the four of your group when it first came out… my only note would be that some of the chapters weren’t written by the author who I felt had the strongest grasp of that aspect. Actually, I should read it again to see if leaving it where my kids can find it is worth doing. I know the web space has moved on so much that some of the advice no longer would apply.
