"Bad endings" are a classic staple of interactive fiction. There are many pros and cons to having them, but more of the latter in regards to choicegames due to their lack of checkpoints and saving. It was something I learned very quickly after Book 1: nobody wants to redo dozens and dozens of choices.

And while it was hard to get a bad ending back then, I don't believe I've had a "true" one since. (The bad ending in Book 3 during the trial scene is a fakeout!) This changes with Chapter 5 of Book 6.

The first benefit to re-introducing them here is that we're still early in the book at this point, so even if you do manage to get one, it's not going to sting as much. But secondly and more importantly, it drives home the new game mechanic of "keeping your attachment score balanced".

I really like this mechanic, much more than the attunement one, and I think that's going to change peoples approach to how they make choices. And that's a fun and refreshing change—or so I like to think!
