













As shown above, Ben, Arthur and Manni went through quite a bit of visual development before I settled on designs I was happy with. The sketch for Ben actually shows him a little heftier than he is in part 1, so you can see into his future a tiny bit there. Arthur's look was quite challenging. He needed to look grumpy and slightly worn down by the world, whilst still retaining a more cute, dadlike appearance.
For the final story illustrations I played with a few different angles here too. The aim is always to show off the character in their best light, and to convey the scenario quickly and efficiently whilst also setting a tone and a mood. Body language, facial expressions, lighting and 'camera' angles all play a big part in this. I was actually very happy with how the final image of Arthur and Manni came out - I think it's one of my favourite pieces I've drawn in general.
