John Belushi was originally tabbed to play Peter Venkman in the original script which was set in outer space. Chevy Chase reportedly was offered the role and passed. Then it went to Bill Murray who was the best choice. By this point it was decided to scratch the outer space idea and have it be a going into business story. Eddie Murphy was offered the role of Winston, but passed.

2025-10-19 12:30:32 +0000 UTCJohn Candy was originally going to play the neighbor played by Rick Moranis. Candy envisioned the guy being German with Rottweilers. He passed, but recommended Moranis. The party scene in his apartment was all filmed in one shot and completely improvised by Moranis.
