Blood Simple (1984) Watch along

You can just drop everything you're doing and watch this movie immediately. You WILL NOT REGRET IT!

Holy hell, Blood Simple is an absolute banger of a film. The Coen Brothers’ debut film is a wild ride that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. I’m still thinking about this film days after watching it, from how brilliantly it blends genres, which is something I never expected. Part noir, part thriller, (which I kept saying horror, same same) and a little touch of dark comedy. This movie HOOKS YOU! My jaw is still on the floor, wondering what kind of genius minds cooked this up.

The Coens are meticulous as hell, and it shows in every frame (and every movie I've seen from them). They pay attention to every detail in storytelling+, not only in the writing but also in the visuals. What an impact this film has on the viewer. It's not a lot of dialogue, extra lean in fact, but just what we need to push the story along, as well as the actors conveying everything we need to see and feel across their faces to keep us compelled to follow the fuck-up of events that transpire. Frances McDormand, John Getz, Dan Hedaya, and M. Emmet Walsh are phenomenal, saying so much with a look! They inhabit these flawed, desperate people, making you feel every ounce of their paranoia, greed, and betrayal. I love the little dialogue we get, it’s precisely what the story needs. Mainly cause the visuals and acting are TOP TIER!

What really sets this film apart is how it weaves miscommunication into the core of the story. The plot and subplots spiral out of control because people jump to conclusions, or just plain screw up. It’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion, and you can’t look away. The dark humour threaded through it all is pure Coen (from the movies of theirs I have seen), they are so damn clever it makes you laugh even when you’re wincing. That ceiling fan? Is it a freaking metaphor for the spinning like the chaos in the characters’ heads, hinting at the vicious cycle of bad choices and worse outcomes. Round and round we go!

When I think of Raising Arizona, I see bright colours, but like No Country for Old Men, this aesthetic is another knockout. The noir vibes and the shadowy lighting, seedy bars, and the gritty, Texas backdrop feel straight out of a horror flick. The score is a character in itself, all moody and menacing, keeping you on edge as the tension builds. Every shot is deliberate, from the neon glow of a jukebox to the stark isolation of a dirt road at night, (friggen loved) and immerses you in its world, making you feel the weight of every mistake.

Let's not forget Barry Sonnenfeld as the DOP!! What rockin' work! I know him from some of my fave movies. His moody lighting and striking compositions, I feel, really helped define the Coen Brothers’ gritty, noir-infused aesthetic for this film.

For a debut film, Blood Simple is ballsy, it's bold and showcases them as a force to be reckoned with. Their signature style, quirky, authentic, and unapologetically original, is all over this thing and so friggen inspiring. It’s a masterclass in how to take a simple premise and turn it into something unforgettable through sheer craft and vision. You can see them plant the seeds of their later work here, but Blood Simple stands on its own as a raw, visceral gem.

This movie is a wild, fucked-up ride, and it’s worth every second. SO GO WATCH NOW! And then let me know your thoughts DOWN BELOW ASAP

Hope you enjoy your Saturday Matinee!

This was THE movie for me. I was aware of movies, and watched the occasional film, at University i even helped show some 16 mm films in auditoriums in the evenings, but it was mechanical. There was no love. Just a way to entertain myself. But this movie. Showed me whats possible. I can point to this movie, back in my Austin days, that awoke the appreciation that has lasted for decades.

Gardner von Holt

Agreed Clay! One film that she dominated and I think she was nominated for, was Martin McDonagh's THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI.. Another Director lately who scores on every film he's written and directed and fast becoming one of my favorites. I hope she someday gets around to seeing it for no other reason than Sam Rockwell's Oscar winning performance...

Your write up grabbed me. I liked the movie. Glad you chose it. An excellent noir crime thriller. Wow -- the visuals -- including up to the very end wth the dying view facing up under the sink. Many of the film locations are in Austin. I also like No Country for Old Men (and your reaction). Another movie with a young pretty Frances McDormand is Mississippi Burning (1988).
