This movie was pure escapism for me as a kid because i grew up on a street not that different from this one. Except nothing exciting ever happened there. All my neighbours were just a bunch of retired people.

I saw it in the theater as an adult, so I don't think it's "nostalgia". I just loved it at the time as a fun comedy. It's a great example of what Joe Dante does best - a mixture of comedy and horror. He did, after all, also give us "Gremlins", "The Howling", "Piranha", and many others. Everyone should check out his "The Hole" (2009) which never saw appreciable release. It's about a family that moves into a suburban house which has a padlocked bottomless pit in the basement. Also, his and Allan Arkush's exploitation satire "Hollywood Boulevard" (1976), where they bet their boss, Roger Corman, that they could make a profitable exploitation film for $54,000. Be forewarned: there is nudity - it's an exploitation film! PS- In Walter's living room, next to a photo of Walter (Gail Gordon) I swear there is a picture of Lucille Ball! If you know, you know. PPS- There was an alternate ending where the Klopeks kill Ray. And another where the Klopeks were innocent. Do you think they went with the right one? PPPS- Garbage IS public domain once it hits the curb. And Queenie the dog, was also in "Silence of the Lambs".
