Cabaret (1972) watch along

Life is a Cabaret! #63 on the AFI List

This movie wildly took me by surprise. I had no idea what this was about going into it but I am pleasantly surprised. Stand out performance for me from Michael York and Liza Minelli! For different reasons they were incredible but York’s vulnerability and inner conflict killed my soul. I’m still feeling unsettled with the movie, but the story, it was so well done. I felt like it was so sweet and vulnerable to sit with these characters and see what they are were struggling with. Knowing as a viewer what transpired in Germany loomed over the the film and in you as you watched. I couldn’t get over the sensation something terrible was going to happen (terrible shit does happen).

The sets, costumes, lighting, numbers, and cinematography was incredible! I loved how this film oozed artistry. I can see how the subject matter would have hit audiences and been so impactful especially early 70’s in a changing time. I think it rightfully deserves a spot on this list.

Let me know your thoughts on this one!

Loved your reaction to this movie. it has always been one of my favorite movie. the music was amazing the performance of the actors were incredible. Liza Minnelli was perfect for the role and Michael York amazing, plus I loved Joel Grey who was reprising his stage role as the Master of Ceremonies. This movie has so many life situations that people go through and even at the time period. What I like from your reaction was you understand most of it, that was great, and it made you think. Come hear the music play Life is a cabaret, old chum! Come to the cabaret!

My mom took me to see this as the movie, she never saw it but we both loved musicals, and as the movie went on you can see her becoming very nervous about the subject matter, and also being Jewish we had a long conversation about that time, and it became a favorite musical because brought us a little closer, and Grey as the MC was a great showing, he deserved the oscar

The Kit Kat Klub encourages people to forget about reality and the troubles of the outside world, to lose themselves in fantasy, but abstaining from engaging with a rising evil only helps it flourish. It eventually gets inside and corrupts and destroys you anyway. Few films have so potently expressed the insidious and creeping rise of Nazism. Fosse makes everything look distorted and grotesque, right up to the final indelible image, but contrasts that with the humanity of Brian and Sally, both of whom are beautifully played. Minnelli is an absolute wonder here; one of the greatest examples in film history of a rising star finding the perfect role at exactly the right time. She subsequently struggled to find another role to match it, although I think she’s tremendous in Scorsese’s New York, New York.

I enjoyed it. Especially the cabaret scenes and I am NOT a musical person. It's worth a shot even if you think this isn't your type of movie.
