A movie I will NEVER forget and so happy to be in the exact moment I was in to see this for the first time. It is SO special. A LOT of special movies this week! It's like the "Special Cup" in Mario Kart or something. Literally, watched this once and wanna go to Japan so badly! I can't replicate my outro here so I will leave that for you to experience. I'm still moved to tears thinking about this movie.

Can't wait to hear about your experience with it and everything else!

xx

Lost In Translation (2003) Watch along

Comments

This is my travel movie. It's been quite a while (Spring of 2019) but it keeps me anchored whenever I'm out of the country. It is permanently downloaded on my phone and I have a solar panel charger I take everywhere. Even if I'm in a remote location without wifi or cell service - I can watch this movie and get my bearings. :)

Rewatched your reaction. Loved your outro.

The Fellini film they are watching in the hotel room (nice catch after only seeing one of them, btw) is La Dolce Vita.

I joined your Patreon specifically to see this reaction, as this is my favorite film. I'm 62 years old, so I can definitely relate to Bill Murray's character. I love the fact that the film didn't do the clichè thing of making their relationship sexual, but instead kept it as an emotional connection. She is at the beginning of the prime years of her life, while he as at the tail end of his, and that is what forms their attraction for each other Consider the scene where she sees the women doing the flower arranging. It shows her uncertainty, while she sees the women around her being confident in what they are doing. That's what she wants. Now think about the scene when he tucks her into bed and she smiles up at him, then closes her eyes and goes to sleep. He nods and then quietly leaves the room. That illustrates his recognition that the time when he could hook up with someone like her is in the past. She is attracted to his wisdom and experience, while he is attracted to her youth and energy, feeling a nostalgia for his past. They both see in each other what they want in themselves. Great reaction. I look forward to many more (especially to quieter, thoughtful movies like this rather than to yet another blockbuster).

A great film. One of my favorites and certainly Bill Murray's greatest film. There is more said in the silences between them than in other whole films. Murray should have gotten the Oscar.

That final scene (a sweet moment and with the bond between the two apparent) made you emotional. You even felt it in your outro when you recalled the scene. As for what he whispered to her, that was not important for the audience to know. The scene was captured just fine. While there has been speculation and even audio analysis, only Coppola, Murray, and Johansson know what Bill Murray whispered to Scarlett Johansson. Sofia Coppola has claimed that nothing was said at all. She explained in 2022 that the scene was shot on the last day of filming, and the original plan was to add in words in post-production -- but ended up deciding to just keep in the unintelligible whispering. “That thing Bill whispers to Scarlett was never intended to be anything,” she admitted. “I was going to figure out later what to say and add it in and then we never did.” In retrospect, she sees the unfinished moment that closed the film as a happy accident and not a mistake. “It was between them,” she says of the statement. “Just acknowledging that week meant something to both of them and it affects them going back to their lives.” In 2022, Johansson refused to say what was whispered but did comment on the evolving intense connection between the two characters in the movie. "The way these two characters affect one another is really profound," she notes. "You watch it and you don't judge it."

I relate to this a lot, although I’m happy where my life ended up. That’s why this movie is so special. I think we all have a story like this in our lives ❤️

Watching this watch along I had so many thoughts I wanted to post here. I’ve seen this movie a few times and it’s definitely special. Ultimately though, instead of all the thoughts, I’ll just say this. Ive had a Charlotte in my life. The age difference wasn’t there, but the impossibility was. I miss her. I know the same is true of her to me. I’ll be lost in her memory for a few days now, this movie always has that effect. I hope she is good. I hope she is happy.

To me, this beautiful movie is about two humans connecting. You aptly called it "two souls kindred." Two lonely humans, each with their own issues in life. In your reaction, you had good comments during the movie and in the outro. The Sofia Coppola style can include dragging out scenes (e.g., including mundane acts) that some people don't like, but I do [see, e.g., "Somehwere" (2010) having a young Elle Fanning]. Contributes to that calming, peace and pacing, atmosphere you alluded to. Scarlett Johannsen was age 17 during filming but her character (Charlotte) is early 20s. The movie nominated for 4 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor (Bill Murray), and Best Director (Sofia Coppola). Sofia Coppola won Best Writing Oscar. Sofia Coppola noted that when she made the movie, she was relatively young and didn't really think about the age difference between Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. "I was just doing my thing at the time it was made,” she said of the age gap. “Bill is so lovable and charming. Part of the story is about how you can have romantic connections that aren’t sexual or physical. You can have crushes on people where it isn’t that kind of thing. Part of the idea was that you can have connections where you can’t be together for various reasons because you’re at different points in life.” We took that high-speed train from Tokyo to Kyoto, like Charlotte did. In Tokyo, we went to the arcades on two days. By the way, you mentioned Bonnie Rait -- I like her. Sean Connery and Daniel Craig are my two favorite Bonds.

This movie is mesmerizing and I've always found it poetic. Just some great performances from Bill and Scarlett. I haven't seen it for a long time, and it is charming to be reacquainted with this film. Thanks for the reaction, Ames!

I think this will always be one of my favorites. Thank you again for choosing to cover it.
