The VVitch (2015) watch along

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

What an Epic month it’s been! It’s so sad to see it go! There are sooo manyyyy horror movies I need and want to see! We had so many amazing polls this month and nominations soo thank you so much for being part of this! Even if your not into spooky season! I appreciate all your support here this month!

So. Let’s talk about it

The VVitch (2015) came at me with a vengeance for ever doubting it! It had always been on my radar, but I somehow thought it wasn’t my style. Turns out, I was so wrong. I WAS SO WRONG! This isn’t your typical horror film—it's a masterclass in filmmaking. Every detail felt so meticulously crafted that I almost want to call it perfect.

I'm a huge fan of witches and witchcraft, and this movie went beyond my expectations. It’s pure brilliance, with every frame, every speckle of film grain speaking volumes. The storyline is haunting, and the way the plot unfolds is a slow-burn that keeps you glued, layering in reveals and revelations building tension that feels like it’s taking hold of you. The acting is phenomenal, with each character feeling intensely real and grounded in the world they inhabit.

The costumes, set design, and hair and makeup are spot-on, and they work seamlessly with the film’s color palette and tone, immersing you fully in the period. This is simplicity elevated; there’s a purpose behind every shot and every line of dialogue. And the ending? Absolutely one of the most satisfying, chilling conclusions I could have hoped for. The VVitch is, in every sense, a modern horror classic. It’s eerie beauty and precision makes it 👌🏽Gahh! I loved it! And what a perfect movie for Halloween!!

Thanks for another great reaction. Just wanted to share a tiny bit of symbolism that hit me like a diamond bullet this third time around. I always thought it unfortunate and unflattering for Anya that when Thomasin kills her mom the blood drizzles on her face and almost forms a kind of mustache. Then it hit me. That's the goddam rabbit!! Anyway thanks again. Cheers.

For the record: I think she’s cool I really don’t have anything against her. I prefer her in this than others I’ve seen and I still haven’t seen the queens gambit. Shes extremely talented. For a breakout role ( if this is it ) it’s what any actors dreams of. I still prefer Florence Pugh as an actor. Thought she was equally amazing or if not better in Midsommar but I take this movie over Midsommar.

The VVitch is one of those special films that has just never left my memory. I recall it taking a lot of people by surprise when it got released, because it wasn't what anyone was expecting. We were getting so many of the same types of movies in the genre around that time, then this thing gets a ton of buzz at Sundance and becomes very successful. We just started hearing the title mentioned by everyone who had seen it. It's one of the most unique films in horror I can think of and one of the most visceral in any genre. The atmosphere, color, sound, setting, and established tone continue building tension the entire 90 minutes, and I still remember how long the the first impression was left on me after my first watch. I'm happy to say I felt the same on my second, third and fourth viewings. Ames, this might be the first time I've seen you warm to Anya Taylor-Joy. I'm glad you appreciated her in this one. Perfect choice to cap off the holiday.

I had to watch this one again with you Ames, and I'm so glad I did! I'm not a huge fan of the horror genre but for some reason I decided to check out The VVitch when it was released back in 2015. It scared the wits out of me!! There was an authenticity to it that was completely unnerving. Although the casting was great across the board, I thought Anya Taylor-Joy as Thomasin and Ralph Ineson as William in particular were exceptional. ***** SPOILERS BELOW ***** There were so many truly disturbing aspects to the film, chief among them for me was the horrifying brand of dark religious extremism throughout that was all about sin, blame, guilt and shame, and never about love, faith, forgiveness and hope. This truly set the tone for the film. From the very start, it was clear that things were bad for the family... and about to get much worse. And the soundtrack!! Oh my goodness! The dissonant strings! The vexed voices! Definitely like fingernails on a chalkboard!! Even the sustained silences were creepy and effective! I thought the final scene was fascinating and that Anya Taylor-Joy was amazingly nuanced in her performance. I'm sure there are many interpretations of what was happening in that last scene, but to me, it seemed like the expression on her face was a mixture of laughter and tears; of irony and capitulation. As though she was thinking, "Screw it! I've finally become the thing they all falsely accused me of. To hell with it (and them... and me)!" She knew she wasn't free (she signed the book; she had a new master), but perhaps she was feeling a sense of surrender and relief. She was tired of fighting and just didn't care anymore. A fascinating story, an amazing film production and a great reaction!

This one is cinematic nirvana for me. A truly immersive viewing experience. The devil is truly in the details. Thanks for a great Spooktober! 👻

I LOVE THAT thanks John!!!

Fantastic reaction Ames! I love how this film can take something as simple as a tree line and make it creepy and terrifying. Such a great horror film. Also to answer your question at the start of the reaction. I watch these on my free time at home. The time is random, usually whenever the mood hits. If it at a meal time I will usually eat with it. Like I watched this at 6 PM so I ate dinner with it (left over pizza.) I will also sometimes set up stuff to match a theme like tonight for Halloween I have some candles lite on my computer desk lol.

Its the film that put Robert Eggars (an acquired taste for some still) onto Hollywood's radar of exciting new filmmakers (look for his next film NOSFERATU coming out this Xmas) Also glad to see you coming around to Ana Taylor Joy who was barely a teenager when she made this film. For me? This was the first "witch" film I saw that felt AUTHENTIC. Eggars really went the extra mile to put you back into 1630's New England when religious fanatics ruled these superstitious villages. His dialog and casting was spot on. If witches really did exist back then they would HAVE TO look like what he put on film here...

I think this is the perfect movie to wrap up Spooktober. Looking forward to a great late-night watch.

If they do a sequel I hope it’s called Son of a VVitch

I watched this back when it came out with my girlfriends daughter. She thought it was totally boring and I thought it was brilliant. Like you stated before, it’s a slow burn and I “got it”, where I don’t think she did at all.

Oh man I've seem some funny memes i never knew where they were from and looking at the cast this must be the movie hahahahaha
