IT FOLLOWS (2014) watch along

Hey friends! Happy Saturday!

*messed up the sync, I wanted to keep my original reactions to the intro in. It’s noted in video. You can skip or watch, then sync at the correct spot!

🚨gentle spoilers below!🚨

Finally diving into It Follows (2014), a movie on my must-watch list forever! It’s incredible how much this film has packed in that I missed on the first watch. There’s a brilliance here that really sneaks up on you—subtle, layered choices that stick long after the credits roll. As it’s been settling in my mind the past few weeks, I’m noticing meanings and details that didn’t hit me right away. Each day things I missed while watching, and deeper meanings have started to surface upon reflection.

It tackles fear and trauma in a way I haven’t seen before, using horror to dive into themes like sexuality, mortality, and the inevitability of consequence. Using your fear to thrive. There’s this unshakable feeling of being pursued—both literally and metaphorically—that gets under your skin through every frame. Builds paranoia, anxiety and suspense. Along with the sound design or the strategic lack of sound was outstanding. The cinematography and every choice in direction make you feel all the feels. This movie has a major high score rating for creepy and WTF vibes. I am truly not sure if I loved it or if it was a lunch box letdown (YET). Because while I was watching it I loved how it was filmed and how it was making you feel, but I think I am still not sure as a whole. Not sure if it was the end of 2nd act or the 3rd act. I am not sure if it was because of the non-answers. Or if this movie is meant to stay with you, just like the curse. Slow burn into your thoughts lol. That's why I need a re-watch asap.

I can't wait to talk to you all about it! and get some great takes on it! Leave it all down below!

Love your guts!

So was this a horror movie or a long-lost PSA from Nancy Reagan's 'Just Say No' campaign? An interesting first time watch. Like you, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Will give it another look somewhere down the line. I was fascinated by the mixed technologies sprinkled about. Black and white televisions sharing a universe with smart compacts (or whatever that hand-held device was supposed to be). A pleasant enough diversion. And always fun to watch you and Mel riffing.

Respect! Ya I think u put it so eloquently into words more than I could speak in a live reaction LOL loved a lot it the things u mentioned SOUND why I kept my original sync in.. it’s superb!! POV yes it’s amazing. Also the added ppl in background u don’t know is the “it follows” as Mel called it lol! It is missing something. Hope I come to terms and figure it out in another rewatch :)

***Spoiler Speak*** I went into this one not remembering if I had seen it before. It took me until the climax at the pool to remember that this is actually the THIRD time I have seen this movie (the second time I was paying no attention at all). I hope that might be saying more about the film than about me. My favorite things about this one have to be the sound design, and the style of p.o.v. cinematography that isn't really p.o.v. at all, but the camera slowly following our cast to create the sense of uneasiness. So...we have the setup of a sexually-transmitted stalker demon thing who can really only be seen by the person (people) in danger. We do not end with any closure or explanation, so I think I'm with Mel: that kind of thing is more frustrating than thrilling. She also verbalized multiple times that "This dude looks like he's 12." I felt the same way about the girls. They were actually appropriately cast for the ages of the characters they were playing, but I couldn't help thinking that I would have enjoyed this more if I had been able to see it at age 20. The cast looks at least 5 years younger than their actual ages, which made each and every intimacy scene extremely uncomfortable to watch. I felt creepy, like I was watching a bunch of 16 year-olds. Admittedly, the entire point may have been to make those scenes uncomfortable, considering the subject matter, but the predatory nature of the transmittal is more disturbing than interesting. I love horror, because I find it to be a very unique form of entertainment, but I also need to leave feeling entertained and exhilarated, rather than disturbed or confused, or I don't have as much fun. I can certainly appreciate the uniqueness of this one, but I find it to be the weakest of the three we saw this week.

I think ur sooo right, cause I went back throu the reaction and I was like ok I was loving a lot of it, but ya, need another few watches to get it. It’s already set in more just thinking on it!!! She is amazing! Can’t wait to see her in more!

That’s a great write up. I’d suggest a second, and third watch. I wasn’t sure if I liked it in first go either. I think it was because I was expecting something else and didn’t get it. But I love it now. Quick note on Maika Monroe, my favorite current scream Queen (it’s a new golden age for them). Her ability to get into such different characters that are put in intense situations is amazing. This movie, Longlegs, Watcher, Significant Other, Villains….and I’m currently rewatching Tau. She’s just magnetic no matter what. I can’t wait for what she does next, and she’s only 31. The sequel to this, They Follow, is coming soon.
