CARRIE (1976) watch along

Happy Friday!

I hope everyone has had a great week and is ready to unwind with this fun reaction! I apologize for all my giggles. You will see why in a moment

🚨🚨some spoilers below🚨🚨

I had no idea this was a Stephen King adaptation and a Brian De Palma film! That combo alone makes it intriguing, but what really stuck with me in the hours and days after watching Carrie was how smart and layered the story is. Sure, some parts feel a bit over the top when viewed through a modern lens, but I think that’s part of its power—it still holds a lot of emotional weight.

Carrie is a character you can’t help but connect with on some level. Even though I didn’t grow up in a super strict religious family, her experiences, especially around womanhood and the physical changes we all go through, really resonate. The way the film handles that vulnerability and isolation is raw and relatable.

I love how the story unfolds. It’s not just about a girl with telekinetic powers—it’s about her emotional journey. As the plot progresses, you really feel the weight of each of her hardships, and you see her slowly build up strength, only for everything to spiral into tragedy. The layers of symbolism, from religious repression to bullying, make it more than just a horror film—it’s a story of human pain and revenge. There’s something quietly powerful in how all of that is portrayed.

I actually wish I had shared more of my own experiences with religion because I think there’s a deeper connection to be made there. But hey, c’est la vie! I was in the moment and happy for that! It still was a special evening and one I will never forget!

That’s why we go to the movies :)

I am forever embarrassed for calling Danny Zuko, Johnny Duko! (I think). Wouldnt be a great reaction without a blunder from me!

Leave it all down below! love your guts!

Boy you guys were just a giggle factory. I saw Carrie in the movies when I was like 16 and that audience had such a different reaction. This was never supposed to be a slasher film. I guess all the in your face gore of modern slasher films have desensitized the young audience of today. I suggest that you watch it again in the future just you and I think you will appreciate some of the nuances you missed. Sissy Spacek is one of the greatest actors ever. Two films I suggest A Coal Miners Daughter for which she won the Oscar and Badlands one of her and Martin Sheen's first movie.

A lot of times, I have difficulty hearing you. I don't know if the mic is soft or what. This time I made it about ten minutes in because the commentary was so quiet. Really bummed out to have missed it. I know I'm deafer than most so it's probably just a me issue, but your sound is definitely a lot softer than most other reactors I follow.

Whoa cool fun fact it was sissy’s arm! I loved her in this!

Just watched this reaction today. I will make an effort to use the term dirty pillows every day now.

I'm one of the minority of people my age who read the novel before I saw the film. I would just like to speak a bit about how the story is partly about how religion can turn people crazy and cause them to make awful choices. Margaret was an insane woman who took out her psychosis on ON Carrie and totally messed her up. In the novel, it is made clear that Ralph was killed in an industrial accident at work before Carrie was born. In the movie, Carrie says that he ran away, but that could be what Margaret wanted her to believe. The 76 version was fairly true to the novel. There have been a few remakes that had positive things but none of them are on the level as the original film, in my opinion. There is a sequel which I think is just a giant pile of MEH. It's literally the same story and no one has learned a damn thing. It also features a young woman who was allegedly Carrie's half sister. If Ralph white died before Carrie was born, a 17 year old half sister would have been alive when Carrie got bullied into lunacy and mass murder, NOT 20 years after the fact.

Stephen King tells the story of being in the theater for a showing of the film, when, at the end when the arm reaches up (it really was Sissy Spacek's arm - she was in a box below) and Sue screams, a large black man seated in front of him yelled "She ain't never gonna be right!". Among other genre work, check out DePalma's "The Phantom of the Paradise" (1974), a unique musical/comedy/horror film.

cool can't wait to see those!

I suppose its understandable, given the intro, to think that you've stumbled into a 70's teen sex comedy. Quite a few dirty pillows in need of laundering. A little heavy handed for my tastes but DePalma is an effective if somewhat derivative (Hitchcock light) film maker when it comes to horror.. If I were to recommend a DePalma film I'd go with something outside the horror genre like Casualties of War. I do really enjoy the work of Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. Both are amazing actresses, I would recommend Coal Miner's Daughter for a Spacek watch. And a big recommend for The Hustler for a better look at Laurie (co-starring Paul Newman and George C. Scott). Nice to see you and Mel doing a little cosplay. Made me start to fantasize about Bugs Bunny in a dress.

James Rogers

Omg how did we not think of that 🤣🤣🤣

Waymes World, Waymes World!! 😀😂

She’s Amazing in this!!

It’s a real joy to see Ames properly discovering Sissy Spacek in what is, by now, certainly her most famous movie. I remember mentioning that JFK was an unfortunate introduction because she had such little to do in basically a nothing role, because she was and is an absolute dynamo of a performer. It’s sort of amazing to me that she’s become somewhat forgotten because of how great she is and how big she was in the 70s-90s. Nominated for six Oscars (winning one for 1980’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter“) she was basically running neck and neck with Meryl Streep for most respected screen actresses for about fifteen years—and, of the two, I’ve always found Sissy to be the more fearless performer. I think she lacked Streep’s commercial sense and so without nearly as many big hits in her filmography, she’s no longer anywhere near as known as Meryl. Also, she had a perpetual babyface until her 40s, which could make casting her tricky, but she elevates everything she’s in. Though she remains somewhat active today, and still doing great work, the 70s and 80s were her glory years: CMD, Missing, Badlands (the film True Romance semi shamelessly ripped off) and Crimes of the Heart are all good to excellent movies in which Spacek plays a major part and are well worth the time of any budding Sissy fans who’d like to see more of her in her prime. She comes from a talented family, too—1st cousin to the late, great Rip Torn, character actor extraordinaire/force of nature/certifiable nut.

Wasn’t he a bubble boy too? 😂😂

Gotta make a quick Commentary here... This was one of John Travolta's first film roles. You can't believe how much of a 70's Icon Travolta really was back then. He had a hit TV show and then just BLEW UP with SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER IN 77. Went on to launch another blockbuster 2 years later with GREASE and another a few years later with URBAN COWBOY (one of my faves). Then he just fell off the map. Couldn't find work for years and the few films he did make weren't good. Wasn't until Tarantino cast him in PULP FICTION did his career resurrect. He said an interesting thing in the mid -90's, when his career was still in a tailspin, that I always thought was both totally honest and accurate. " I was never that good but I'm not THIS bad". He's always been a reliable actor in my opinion and it was great to see him in demand again after his 13 year hiatus..
