Shaun of the Dead (2004) watch along

2000’s poll winner!!

🚨🚨🚨Spoilers below 🚨🚨🚨

Well, what can I say? This movie totally surprised me! I was expecting a smart comedy, but I didn’t anticipate it being such a heartfelt, genuine zombie comedy!

How did I not realize this was Edgar Wright?! DUH! His fast-paced editing style (which I LOVE so much) should’ve been a dead giveaway. The whole cast was incredible, the humor was brilliant, and the special effects were top-notch. Plus, there were awesome throwbacks to classics like The Deer Hunter and Dawn of the Dead! I’m so glad I had seen those beforehand because it made those moments even better.

I absolutely love Simon Pegg and Nick Frost—especially from Paul—and now I’m excited to see even more of their movies together! I’m so glad this won the poll because it’s honestly a movie for everyone. It feels like a clever, diet Dawn of the Dead parody, but with its own unique, genuine twist.

This is a 10/10 for me, and definitely a new favorite!

Let me know all your comments down below!

Happy watching :):):)

The edits in this movie are so f'in tight. The whole switching between the channels and each one perfectly continues what is actually happening. What is amazing with this movie is the plot and what happens to the characters are foreshadowed multiple times throughout and I still find new elements that I somehow have missed. Hope you continue with the Cornetto trilogy as well as Edgar's Baby Driver.

I wish I saw NOTLD before coming up this week!

I gave in and decided to watch Shaun of the Dead with the watch-along. I remember quite a lot of it, but I'm really excited to experience it with the commentary. All the insights make these movies so enjoyable! :D

How many genres can say the best entry was a move that was a love letter to the genre. Shaun is the greatest,

Well, it’s time to put the rest of the Cornetto trilogy (Hot Fuzz, The World’s End) on your list, Ames. They’re just as great as this and keep Pegg, Frost, and Wright together (and many of the other actors). They are standalone films but share DNA to make it a pseudo trilogy. And also, the actress who played Yvonne (Jessica Hynes) worked with Pegg and Frost before on a British TV series they created called Spaced which you would probably enjoy as well. It also has Frost as part of the ensemble and you can very much see the early stages of Wright’s style developing and is very much a precursor to how this trilogy came to be.

A great comedy/horror film. The combo of Wright and Pegg always seems to deliver. And Pegg really gets to show his acting chops. The man can emote. Shawn's early morning 'stumble and moan' is a nice little homage to a scene from Romero's Day of the Dead. Fun fact; Wright and Pegg have cameos as zombies in Romero's Land of the Dead.

James Rogers

In case it hasn’t been said, Dianne is played by Lucy Davis, she was in the Wonder Woman movies but also in the UK version of The Office. She played the ‘Pam’ type secretary character named Dawn and Martin Freeman played the Jim type character ‘Tim’, so when they pass each other in this movie it’s pretty cool. Also, Yvonne, Shaun’s friend who led that other group, was Simon Peggy’s friend and roommate in the fantastic series Spaced, which also starred Nick Frost. I could go on and on, there’s a much smaller pool of British actors to choose from. Lastly, the legend Peter Serafinowicz plays Pete. And anyone who watches 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown knows he’s hysterical.

To paraphrase a comment I once saw: Shaun of the Dead is very much a love letter to old school zombie horror movies (just as Hot Fuzz is a love letter to buddy cops / action films).

If no one has clued you in, this is the first of the so-called "Cornetto Trilogy": Shaun, "Hot Fuzz" and "The World's End". All Pegg, Frost and Wright. All different. All genius!

Excellent movie for October. My first watch. I like the movie. (I like better than Tremors.) Hilarious. Clever and has heart, as you indicated. Good music. Liz is pretty. That's cool the movie quotes Betrand Russell. I may rewatch to pick up more intricacies/references. I don't count myself as a member of the rabid fan base who thinks this movie (or the trilogy) is the most brilliant of all time, but I might after a couple of rewatches. I am not really into the traditional horror genre. I tend like horror/comedy (e.g., Zombieland, Dale and Tucker, Shaun of the Dead) better than straight horror. I watched Hot Fuzz a few weeks ago and liked it -- hilarious and had some great one liners. I might be with the consensus in liking Hot Fuzz slightly better than Shaun, but both are dang good. I was glad that by chance I had watched Point Break a few months earlier. The only other Edgar Wright movie I have seen is Scott Pilgrim, which is a top 200 movie for me b/c I have nostalgia and like the creativity, and a decent focus on music. I took my son to see Scott Pilgrim in the theater in 2010 at his request, and ended up liking the movie, and have watched a few times since. As for other Edgar Wright, I want to watch Baby Driver. I did watch the first 20 minutes or so of Last Night in Soho -- I need to give it another chance.
