Displaced Hero (71-74)

I finished editing this early this morning. Then thought to myself 'well, I've released everything else this month slightly early,' so why not this too? So, here you go, 17,000 words of Can One Displaced Hero Save the Galaxy? a day early ;-). I let this one run a bit longer than usual, as I may have listened to a bit too much epic Star Wars music while writing one part of it and gotten carried away. Possibly. Also possible the right amount. (I'm not all that good at matching music to writing, but I included a link in the story to one of several pieces I listened to while writing the relevant section. It does make the moment a bit more badass...credit to John Williams for making everything he ever touched more epic ;-)).

Anyway, we finally get a bit of Shaak Ti screen time, among other things, which is why I chose an AI generation of her for this post (Not one I made, she's surpassingly hard to get good generation of, this person made it). We also see some meaningful responses from the Hutts starting, some more reactions from various groups, and so on. Overall, I think this set of chapters came out as an excellent mix. More commentary will be in the comments as author's notes.

As always, the new bits of story are attached here in various formats, and I'll be updating the Master Files in the Pinned Post shortly. Enjoy more of Displaced Hero!

Got these edits put into the new Master Files, now that they are out. Thanks!

The Foreign Traveler

Oh I didn't even think of that... yes that certainly would give him quite the scare.

Fireblade974

Yes. Palaptine in particular is going to be a little bit panicked when he eventually figures out what it was. After all, if Force Light spreads in usage back to the main Order, it could accidentally reveal him if it went off in his presence. His Dark Side cloak wouldn't hold up well to that.

Novus Peregrine

Mace knows that. But there's a big difference between one or two shatter points and Hundreds all popping up at once. Particularly when your job is to keep order among a group that is, in turn, responsible for helping keep the galaxy in order. For him, the status quo is at least a known situation, whereas large numbers of shatter points represent chaos factors he's going to have to ride out with nothing but the Force to guide him. Not an easy thing to accept, for a leader of people. What little comfort his own training gives him by teaching him to lean on the Force is erased by the Force also letting him feel the chaos coming. Poor bastard :-p.

Novus Peregrine

hm, mace really needs to loosen up and accept that just because it's a shatterpoint doesn't mean hitting it is bad, trying to avoid shatterpoints isn't always the winning strategy also, bye bye bo katan, few will miss you

Delphinous

Man that was awesome one thing I'm curious of is if we will get a reaction seen frome the Council and palpatine feeling what happened maybe not exactly what happened but I'm guessing something like this would be big enough to feel for them.

Fireblade974

I noticed that when I was looking for art of her. A weeeiirrd amount of her art makes her look like her markings were stitched on for some reason. It's like they looked at her film costuming and didn't realize that she's wearing jewelry and that the marking are seamlessly part of her skin.

Novus Peregrine

Great chapter and great art. For once, Shaak Ti's face doesn't look like she's been flayed. *relieved sigh*

Izuku originally thought his Quirk was a potent telekinesis/telepathy mix. Which is how he was trained (it's why his fighting style is very telekinesis focused). He only found out on Ossus that his Quirk actually, for all intents and purposes, makes him a midi-chlorian. That's why the Force is so weird around him. Midi-chlorians are, canonically, essentially translators that convert what the Force wants to get across to someone into something that person can understand. They are actually sentient (not sure about sapient) and act as the go between for the Force and mortals. Since Izuku IS a midi-chlorian via his Quirk, he's essentially tapped directly into the raw datastream of the Unifying Force and his 'fellow midi-chlorians.' He actually has to have a constant filter up to keep from being bombarded by all the information the 'local' cluster of midi-chlorians wherever he is at are streaming to each other. This also makes him a sort of signal booster for any Jedi nearby, since the Veil of the Dark Side interferes with the connection between midi-chlorians and Jedi and he has a sort of direct bypass for that step. At least, that's how I've interpreted it for this story. Darth Plagueis was heavily into experimentation on and with midi-chlorians, so it fits to me. Effectively, Izuku's Quirk just gave him Local Admin access to the Force, while everyone else has user restrictions. It means he's realllllly good at pure Force Use (telekinesis, telepathy, Force Light, Battel Meditation, etc.). But he also kinda sucks at anything to do with the Living Force instead of the Unifying Force. Not to mention the issue of having to filter what comes in into something useful.

Novus Peregrine

Advanced mind stuff. Specifically telekinesis and limited telepathy. Though at this point those abilities have been nearly fully integrated with his force abilities and i doubt even izuku conciously knows where one ends and the other begins

Mr Fox

Its been so long since i started this fic but what is izukus quirk again? It felt like he wasnt using it in the fight with buff!hutt but that might just be because I cant remember what it is.

Oliver Schöneck

Completely understandable :-p. It's an irritatingly common trope across more than just Star Wars. I tend to hate it because of how often it's abused that 'Oh, yes, somehow this hero/villian/fan favorite survived dying!' just because they ARE a fan favorite. I won't say I'll never use it, but it won't ever be something I use casually and certainly not frequently.

Novus Peregrine

Thanks for clarification. Its just i have read other stories where the author says the character is dead then somehow returns 20-30 chapters later. Or like palpatine in the rise of skywalker

Jan Osa

Hmmm, I think his actual reaction would probably be distain. Precisely because he and his predecessors understood that and went with the long and secret approach. He'd see Belirion as a weak Fallen Jedi who could never have become a Sith (not of the Baneite line anyway) and consider it a lesson in why that was. Though, conversely, if he'd been close enough to watch the way the Light Side ripped the veil apart and infused all the Jedi...THAT probably would have scared the shit out of him. The ability to do that, if it could be scaled up, would have the potential to reveal him and send the whole carefully-crafted house of cards crumbling down.

Novus Peregrine

As to the awakening causing problems. It will increase the chaos within the Jedi Order for sure, once they find out. The Senate as a whole doesn't really 'get' the Force well enough to notice without someone reporting something to them, and they don't have any current agents within the League. So the Republic isn't going to notice for quite some time. As for the Bunny Outfits...I'm absolutely going to have Sabe do something with them eventually ;-). I just haven't decided exactly what yet.

Novus Peregrine

Yes, she's dead-dead and not coming back :-p. As I stated in the A/Ns here in the comments, I really don't like her. She willingly signed up to be a terrorist just to get her murder on in the name of tradition. If she'd joined or put together something like the True Mandalorian faction that would be one thing. But she joined the Death Watch...so screw her.

Novus Peregrine

I'm glad you liked them :-). The Death Watch will show up again. This was basically just a single squad of them, doing a high risk high reward job for a lot of credits. A lot of credits which they now have and which will mean the REST of the Death Watch will have more people and hardware when they do show up...

Novus Peregrine

You know i bet if palpatine could have watched that drop pod landing and the ensuing battle he would have shit himself. Cause that sort of shit right there is why he spent centuries sabatoging the order and is trying so hard to get them into a puppet war. He knows that any attempt to take them head on no matter how successful will eventually result in something like this happening to him.

Mr Fox

First thanks for the early chapter loved reading it and the drop pod/battle scene plus the music was epic , secondly thought the force "awakening" was cool and you've stated how alot of them arent going to bump up the number of force combatants yet im wondering if people from the republic looking from outside perspective will realise that or will cause more trouble with tge senate, jedi traditionalists and palpy all in different ways , also just wanted to say loved the shaak scenes and would bust a gut laughing if you do decide to have the chaos troll aka sabe follow through with the bunny outfits 🤣

Jamie Celtic

Just making sure bo katan is dead dead right? Not dead “in a coma/bacta tank” post credits dead. Cos if its the first good riddence. She only started her redemtion arc cos her sister was murdered due to her actions

Jan Osa

Military ship escape pods aren't for areas where people spend time. They are for easy access from battle stations. Which generally will be either close to the outer hull or else deep enough that you aren't getting out without some sort of emergency lift to the pod in the first place (basically command staff). As for the internal power supplies for a Pod? Those are verrrrrryyy limited and focused on running the pod as long as possible after it already leaves the ship. Burning 90% of the pod's internal power when you could just boost with a shaped charge instead would be silly. The shape charge method for escape pods is the general norm across most Sci-fi I've read that actually cover them at all. Cheap, reliable, effective.

Novus Peregrine

Loved the new chapters. The political drama was brief and relevant, always good. Action was great and engaging, and the next phase of the crusade is just starting. Good use of the death watch although I thought they would throw themselves into a ground fight rather than sabotage. Still lots of fun and I enjoyed every word.

Tigger42

I see the idea of using the explosives and acknowledge it, but your kinda ignoring the escape pods have internal power supplies, there’s also an internal bias on my part that there’s no way they could design a ship where the important areas people spend time are both behind enough armour deep in the superstructure and close enough to the edge of the ship for quick access to an escape pod. Thus an explosive charge wouldnt work on its own and the thrusters wouldn’t work until they’re out of the ship

Matthew Robar

An escape pod would use something like an explosive charge, then thrusters, not an internal mag-rail since that would assume the ship still has power. More to the point, I get your point, but I didn't want to spend too much time on describing technical details in what is supposed to be an epic battle opening moment :-p. That would sort of screw up the pace. If/when they get used again, they might get a more complete technical description.

Novus Peregrine

I feel like you should rewrite the area where you described the Drop pods, although the description of how it launches from the ship is accurate, it’s also almost identical to how I’d describe the mechanisms for an escape pod launch as they need to get out of a ship and as far away as possible as quickly as they can. So maybe include some commentary about revamping the mechanisms for the escape pods and how they differ either now or when they actually need to be used

Chapter 74: A/N 1: So, in this chapter we see what I've warned you all was going to happen eventually start to actually happen. Izuku and Co pushed for a hell of an initial Blitz to secure a viable position for a war on the Hutts...but they control less than a tenth of Hutt Space. Eventually, their initial momentum was always going to play out and the Hutts would start hitting back. The first signs of this come in the assault on Nar Kreeta, which finally lets the League show off some of their more defensive systems. Yet, it also represents the first time the League fleets were forced to DEFEND rather than attack. A major shift in dynamic. A/N 2: The same is true for the attack on Tythe. Sure it may not have done a ton of damage...but it DID do what the Hutts wanted. It proved that the League's own 'home' wasn't immune to their retaliation. A/N 3: Bo-Katan. I know she has fans. No, I don't know why, as I haven't watched more recent Disney series. I personally don't like her and didn't feel even the slightest bit bad in killing her off. Whatever redeeming qualities she might have eventually developed? They didn't exist at this point in time. She willingly joined a terrorist group that regularly targeted civilians and sold their services to spice and slaver groups. All because she wanted an excuse to murder people in the glorious traditions of her people. I have a lot of respect for someone like Jaster's True Mandalorians...but none at all for the Death Watch and those that joined it.

Novus Peregrine

Chapter 73: A/N 1: This chapter was actually the first one of this batch that I wrote. I was trying to get into 'Star Wars' mood, and listened to a bunch of Epic Star Wars Music...which resulted in the Orbital Drop scene. Which I can only hope I did half decent justice too! Honestly, Jedi ought to be just about the perfect troops for that sort of thing. Able to use the Force to maneuver through defensive fire and disproportionately dangerous in small numbers once they land. Also, considering Miruko was this Izuku's mentor, I figured it was Exactly the sort of Dynamic Brute Force Entry tactic that would deeply appeal to him. A/N 2: Just a reminder, I lean heavily toward the EU version of the Force. Which explicitly says 'No, the Dark Side is not natural.' Really, the only implication that it could be even in canon is the Ones. And...well...the Son was an unstable, murderous, psycho. So I kinda can't agree there either. The various fan interpretations that 'the Dark Side isn't so bad because XYZ' are just that, fan interpretations. A/N 3: Building on that...midi-chlorins don't mean shit. Even in canon, literally all a high count gets you is an easier connection to the Force. Anakin was skilled because he was given a cheat code to make everything come easy, since it was harder for him to NOT hear the Force where most people struggled with that part. It didn't actually do a single thing for his power level, though. That's a common misunderstanding. Anakin wasn't any more powerful than any other Jedi. He just had an easier time growing into that power. We got this lesson as early as Empire, when Yoda verbally smacks Luke for failing because he didn't believe. Once you have a reliable connection to the Force, the scale of what you can do WITH it is pretty much entirely hooked to your own mental blocks. Meaning, if someone gets a jumpstart to forging that connection... A/N 4: ...you end up with someone who can access the Force without a high midi-chlorin count. This is Repeatedly presented as fact in the EU. There are at LEAST two separate factions of Force Users (The Matukai and the Aing-Tii) that could teach you to access the force without being innately Force Sensitive. High midi-chlorins are basically just a short cut to something anyone can do with enough effort and belief. A/N 5: Note! This does NOT mean that the League suddenly has a massive infusion of Jedi troopers or some such nonsense. Those that 'awoke' are all adults, with professions and jobs. Most of them will walk away with nothing more than one or two neat tricks useful to make them better mechanics, pilots, strategists, or so on. SOME of them will be interested in more and will become a pool for new Force Using talent to be slowly trained from. This honestly will have greater effects on the Clone Wars, rather than making an immediate power shift for the Hutt Crusades. It's setup for events later, rather than a dynamic shift in how the pieces on the board are moving currently.

Novus Peregrine

Chapter 72: A/N 1: Honestly, nothing brings Jedi and others together like plotting the downfall of evil. Buttkicking for goodness! Also, pretty much the perfect way for Izuku to carefully out himself to representatives of the new influx of Jedi, without them immediately jumping to conclusions. A/N 2: As you might have guessed, Shaak Ti is one of the women I've set up for the Possibility of joining Izuku/Aayla/Mei. Shaak Ti and Padme are two of the only female characters during this time period that are 1) in the right age range 2) interesting 3) potentially compatible. Characters like Ahsoka are MUCH too young, and many of the other known female characters are politicians, married already, or far more strict Jedi. Ventress is another possibility, as she's not THAT much younger than them. But I haven't yet decided if the ways in which she's going to be changed will leave her as compatible. Note that none of these will be added without getting feedback from readers first ;-).

Novus Peregrine

Chapter 71: A/N 1: Padme was a bit less fun since it was mostly politics, but she still served as a good viewpoint to show a bit of what's happening with the Senate. As well as to point out a little detail that may have gone unoticed... A/N 2: Specifically, something I didn't notice at first. That, in making a proper ground force for the League...I sort of accidently made something that doesn't normally exist within Star Wars. Even in most of the Eras where everyone hadn't been disarming like idiots, full blown ground armies are unusual in Star Wars, since most defense efforts focus on Space first. Pretty much the only major faction that ever makes proper Ground Armies are the Mandalorians, even the Sith generally outsourcing that...to the Mandalorians. Not even the Empire ever really went into full army groups. The Clones in the Clone Wars came closer than most, but were sort of bad at being an army. Mostly they ended up as several million commandos shoved into an army role and acted like it. Rather than like an actual proper army. With them not even existing yet...the League currently has one of the only proper armies anywhere in Star Wars. With a few militaristic species as just about the only exceptions. A/N 3: The Jedi, meanwhile, are stirred up internally. It's REALLY hard for any of them to argue that the Hutts don't deserve what's happening to them. Yet, at the same time, the Jedi that are leaving for Hutt Space are going against the 'Republic' and Jedi Order alike, in many ways. Causing the silent tug-of-war between patriotism and following the Force to get dragged front and center.
