My Hero Automata 109-111

Woo, update time! First though...no, the image isn't an accurate rendition of Izumi, sadly T-T. It's nothing more than a crude hair color retouch of a 2B AI generation. Izumi should have shoulder length hair, instead of 2B's super short hair, just as one example of something being off with the image. Mostly, I got bored of using my very bad attempt at drawing Izumi (I haven't had the time to make another try), and this shows off something closer to her revamped costume, at least. Bit less frills and without the exposed back, but the right general style. Also, of course, Izumi doesn't use heels. She does look a lot like 2B, though, her Quirk having influenced her growth. Not identical, but like they could easily be the sisters they sort of are in this fic.

Anyway, enough about the questionable art! These few chapters are pretty darn action heavy. So, yay if you like that. If you don't? Don't fret, as we're rapidly pushing to a point where we'll get a tone shift back to more, you know, Academia. I honestly didn't intend to stretch out the Invasion Crisis quite so long. It's just that the sheer scale of it and the knock-on effects ended up taking longer to get under control in a logical fashion then I'd originally planned. The UA crew, somewhat reduced in number admittedly, will be actually returning to UA in the next set of major arcs. There's still at least one more update next month to wrap up the MLA arc, possibly taking up both of February's updates at most (hopefully). After that, though, things will be shifting, with Izumi's foreshadowed 'long-term solution' starting to come into play.

For now, we've got just under 10,000 words in this update, which includes the beginning of the arc dealing with the MLA properly. As well as some more minor hints about that long-term solution. As usual, the new chapters are attached here in various formats, and I'll be updating the Pinned Post with new Master Files shortly. I honestly don't think I need author's notes with this set, so I'll skip that unless people have questions...

My Hero Automata 109-111

Edited both sets of Automata corrections into the new master file that I'll be posting in a few minutes :-). Thanks!

Hup Hup! MHA Chapter 109 Page 7 ...had left in place "as" his careful discretion. Edit: ...had left in place "at" his careful discretion. Page 8: ...were largely giving them "their head" and whatever support they needed. Edit: ...were largely giving them "the go-ahead" and whatever support they needed. (?) Chapter 111 Page 15: ...prevented the untold amounts of death that had come for his world "as a while." (A phrase I don't know maybe?) Page 16: Of fucking course it's a "problem" Edit: ("Problem" isn't fully bold. The "m" specifically) Oh Re-Destro is in for a RUDE fucking awakening when both the Heroes and Military come for him...

Yeah. No. You asked: "why 2B has been altered to essentially be a drone that is not as good a fighter as the Rabbit girl hero?" Then doubled down by stating that 2B and Izumi should be much more capable that someone who 'would be like a cop with 10 years of patrolling.' No where was a question of Miruko's Quirk ever stated. You're just trying to back out of having made an accusation that you now realize doesn't hold up.

Novus Peregrine

So that was a crazy funny reply dude. You need to read my question again. I was not criticizing Mirko. She is my favorite character scene for scene in BnHA. She absolutely needed more screen time as only a few characters in that series did. 2B is interesting but mostly as a machine that becomes more human as she is forced to question her purpose. But her purpose is fighting and killing, specifically killing other Automata because her real designation should be 2E. Anyway my question was if you were going to have Mirko with a quirk that actually increased her fighting skill like in this scene where in a split second was able to see a super small weakness and react to it at faster than human speeds against an opponent that should have had body positioning training from a being that while an inhabitant of that body can also watch from any/all angles in super slow motion. Anyway I am sorry you took offense for my question I will refrain from commenting again. Love your stories.

*stares judgmentally* Izumi is Eighteen. She has a teenager's level of martial arts training. Do you seriously think she spent her entire days as an 8-year-old grinding levels of martial arts? Particularly when she had a thousand and one other things to master AND the mindset that very few people were ever going to be able to out speed or out muscle her? She spent most of her time working on her Quirk, or on inventing the HSN, or on teenage hormones. You're acting like she's some sort of Iseki protagonist that dropped in as an ex-30-year-old-NEET and decided to grind out levels of badass. You're also both grotesquely overestimating 2B's usefulness as a combat trainer AND grotesquely underestimating Miruko's combat experience. 2B's grand total of three years of active combat experience was virtually all against MACHINES. Not humans, or even anything Humanoid for the most part. Her combat pattern was basically 'how to hit things really hard as efficiently as possible because all my enemies are made out of futuristic metal as durable as I am.' Her experience in how to fight humans or humanoid anything is virtually nil. Beyond solid weapon handling ability and whatever she learned ALONGSIDE Izumi. On the other side you have Miruko, who is a battle maniac. The character whose backstory included breaking into and challenging the entirety of multiple underground fight clubs BEFORE she went on to become a hero student. She, literally, crashed 'several' underground fight clubs as a MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT and trashed all comers to the point she got a reputation for wrecking them that made her recognizable years later. A habit that continued when she broke into the Underground Masquerade those years later, as a Hero Student. Where, despite All for One fucking around, she and Rapper basically schooled everyone. She then went on to be the SAME sort of Battle Crazed manic throughout her entire Hero Career. Pinballing around Japan to find all the best fights, arguably probably accruing more actual fighting experience than even All Might (since most of All Might's fights end instantly). When eventually faced with Multiple High-End Nomu in Jaku, Nomu that were a step ABOVE the one from the USJ, she managed to fight them to a standstill. She tanked a direct hit from one of them with barely any delay in popping back up, surprising the fuck out of them that she lived through it, and only eventually starts losing because one of them used a spatial distortion Quirk to RIP HER ARM OFF. After which she KEEPS FIGHTING, managing to stall the remaining Nomu for some time and nearly catch Garaki in the process. Only eventually losing because they were learning and she was weakening from blood loss. Oh, and then just for good measure? She managed to fucking single-handedly hold back the enhanced Shigakari in the final war, actually being physically strong enough to repeatedly STAGGER him. He literally had to evolve an entire new form JUST FOR HER. Making her more successful against him than even Star and Stripe. Of the entire Top 10, in pure feats, she's basically right under All Might. Endevour? Endevour WHO? She outperforms Endevour in virtually every way, repeatedly, throughout the entire series. I did not choose her to give Izumi's a real-world combat reality-check on accident. I picked arguably the one Hero in the entirety of Japan most likely able to hand Izumi her own overconfident ass by a combination of FAR superior skill and enough physical enhancement to keep up with Nomu High-Ends. Meaning that she can keep up with a USJ-tier Nomu which Izumi and 2B struggled with. I did this to help Izumi refine her own abilities, continuing the logical progression of her route to becoming completely badass. The result was her developing the Assault Mode that she would go on to use to considerable effect.

Novus Peregrine

So I apparently hit the enter key on my phone before finishing the post. Then did an edit instead of continuing the post.

Justin Archibald

*Stares incredulously* You aren't seriously referring to the after school training where Miruko took her apart, are you? You know, when Izumi was using Striker Mode, which I explicitly described as: 'Her newly developed ‘Striker Mode’ gave up the mesh and absorption layers, instead focusing on the energy-resistant skin and all the muscle enhancement needed for full-speed movement. It was essentially the opposite of her other new mode, which she’d designated ‘Bruiser.’ That mode flipped things around by emphasizing the mesh and absorption layer for purely physical fights, while Striker was meant for hit and run engagements with ranged combatants. ' So, Izumi fighting a more experienced combatant who can read all her tells, using one of her reduced-power Modes (created in order to be able to fight for longer) that's specifically weak to physical damage. And you're...somehow surprised that she lost? Are you actually reading the fic or just skimming it and ignoring important details? Then accusing me of...what exactly? Internal consistency? Since that series of events is completely logical? Miruko is fast and skilled enough to take on multiple High-End Nomu at a time. Izumi would struggle with her even in full power mode. Even 2B could only take her because she's far more willing to go potentially lethal than Izumi. Izumi in a lower power mode, which is specifically weak to physical damage, was always going to get her ass kicked there. She literally develops Assault Mode as a result. A close-range melee mode suitable for taking someone like Miruko on.

Novus Peregrine

Yeah no. In the scene you have Mirko in a split second dodge, see a weakness land a blow so perfectly it knocks down and stuns Midoria who by this time is tougher than All might in his weakened state, and then moments later can perfectly inform the exact reason that particular weakness was there. That is a level of dominance that cannot be overcome any time soon. Midoria by this point is mostly reinforced like 2b and has been trained for a solid decade (or should have been since other than tech 2b would have little else to do but train her. Also Mirko is experienced for a hero.... living in what was called the time of peace. This would be like a cop with 10 years of patrolling, having more experience than a 21 year old WWII vet that fought through either Europe or the Pacific.

Justin Archibald

*blink* What? 2B would take Miruko apart if she were serious. She never fought her so far as I remember. 2B 'assuming direct control' as it were is a utter last resort the two of them avoid because of how draining it is. Though, to be clear, 2B would win by virtue of sheer stats, not skill. Something a lot of people seem not to realize is that 2B was only active for 3 years (according to her activation and death dates). Meaning Miruko actually has significantly more accured combat experience.

Novus Peregrine

So I started reading this story with the master file and am at the 35% mark of that and really have to ask why 2B has been altered to essentially be a drone that is not as good a fighter as the Rabbit girl hero?

Justin Archibald

I actually barely know anything about Warhammer. I've really only been exposed to it through a handful of fanfictions and a couple of RTS games. So I'll take your word for it. :-p The Space Stuff is going to be a case of 'does the resource cost and time investment make sense.' In the long-term, it absolutely does. Removing some of their industrial needs from the surface, where Rifts can't reach it, is a logical solution. But there's a pretty big up front cost, and I'm not quite sure how fast the progress against the Empire is going to go. I didn't actually originally intend for the initial phase to run as long as it did, but it sort of ran away on me as I tried to keep the progression logical. The sheer scale meant that said logic demanded a lot more time and word count to reach the point of 'vaguely under control' that they've now reached. Given my original timeline was more than a bit off by the time I actually got them to that point, I'm unsure exactly how far progress will get in their remaining UA years.

Novus Peregrine

Well we have "established" that Izu is of the adeptus mechanicus so production industry on Mars is a must at least in the epilogue if not earlyer I think 🤔 But I think orbital industry/moon base and the beginnings of astroid mining you could get at in the intrum while there still in school now thinking of that you could use the orbital installations you make as a rift/gate detection grid and/or for pinpoint rod of god strikes as you don't need expensive missels to attack gates just a lot of tungsten rods

Dominique Brassel

You're quite on target :-). And I do sort of want to do the space thing. I'm just not sure how far they'll get with it before the fic eventually ends. I'm only intending to write through their three years at UA, then an epilogue.

Novus Peregrine

Well I think I read to much fanfiction and manga .... My brain did adventurer guild/guilds as soon as the word guild was mentioned I think not to mention name dropping people calling themselves alchemists and the like Also for the space thing I thought (and hoped) it was inevitable as soon as you did the culture fest space thing (and my knowledge where the base of the androids in nier automata is ) also some of your characters said people shouldn't have abandoned space so as I have read all your storys my brain was sure that you would go there eventually Or of course I somehow read your mind and wanted to share my insights..... yeah no sadly I can't do such a thing

Dominique Brassel

*sweat drop* I guess either you're really good at guessing or I've been dropping enough hints that people are starting to put it together. I've leave the details alone to avoid spoilers, but...yes. You've hit the essentials dead on. A few bits of that, like the space stuff, is pretty far out still. But you've clearly managed to conceptualize a big chunk of Izumi's proposed 'solution. '

Novus Peregrine

Yep we must placate and worship the machine spirit for it was given to us by the omissiha to protect humanity (now I have the head canon that the entity that brought 2B into MHA was the emperor of man) Right I personally don't find most of the drama and bull shit with shigaraki and all-for-one appealing either So for that whole solution for the invasion and stuff here are my ramblings and ideas So gates or rifts that come with that realty bubble method are basically dungeons that need to be contained before a dungeon break happens (the gate /rift stabilizes enough) Heroes and/or other forces could be organized into MMO like guilds and assigned city's or places to guard/protect/raid and all could be organized with the typical kind of "adventurer guild" that is backed by the government or as neutral global organization as an intermediary or just the standard adventurer guild thing even if hero agencys could already kind of be seen as a small kind of guild As you already mentioned in a previous chapter somewhere that there are people calling themselves alchemists and the like so with the adventurer guild you could have "request" for "monster" materiel and the like as well as "peace keeping" request for local areas etc I also think you said that afrika was practical overrun so you could have "hunting expeditions" to there or it could be organized like the guild from monster hunter well the examples are kind of endless here I think And in the background the military and guild higher ups are scheming how to end or permanently stalemate the conflict and izu ,momo and 2B are going to establish space colonies as backup and/or for recourses

Dominique Brassel

100%, absolutely. The Nier influence is pretty minimal and I offer in-story explanations of what little you need to know. I, myself, haven't even played Automata all the way through ;-).

Novus Peregrine

I read the One Piece and Star Wars fict but can I read this one when I know nothing of Nier Automata?

Vick

Hmmm...I guess 2B sort of counts as a Machine Spirit :-p. And yes, Gate Invasion stories were the core inspiration of the whole invasion thing. I knew, right from the start of the story, that I needed a 'big problem' to replace a lot of the abject stupidity that is the latter parts of MHA. I pretty much loathe all of canon MHA past the Eri/Overhaul and Cultural Festival Arcs. I knew full well that I'd eliminate the enemies that make up the major antagonists past that point in a more sane fashion. Which meant I needed a replacement. The Invasion is what I came up with.

Novus Peregrine

Hmmm, let see. The first day of UA was April First, Training Camps were as far as I tracked the explicit day. Those ended August 30th. But I kept tracking generally through the Cultural Festival which would have been November. The Missing Persons case that kicked off the Invasion was right after that. So late November to early December ish. They've just recently past April 1st again, which should have started their 2nd year (and will, soon, it's just delayed as they wrap up MLA). So they are, roughly, just barely into the 5th month of the Invasion. The first month was hell. The second they started to get a handle on things. Third is when they started doing counter attacks and such. More or less. At this point they have a proper defensive position and systems in place, and have found ways to keep the civilian population going. But they are still dealing with trying to find long-term solutions. Getting a handle on long term logistics issues (food, manufacturing, more safe space for the civilians), and on how to get OFF of the defensive and start fighting battles that are more than just holding actions.

Novus Peregrine

How long has the war been going on?

Matthew Robar

Ah yes Wonderful Of course you would let momo make a heavy boltter she is basically a space marine already and thinking about it izu could count as a tech priest or skittari And it is interesting to see how easy the military can wipe out enemies that disregard there existence I look forward to the resolution of this conflict Also I just noticed that this whole invasion thing is like one of those "and suddenly there were dungeons" storys just a lot more "realistic"

Dominique Brassel

Glad they're wrapping up the MLA. Thanks for writing
