Star Trek "Space Seed" Watch Along

Comments

Ricardo Montalbán was a very famous Mexican, American actor and most famous for being the mysterious Mr. Roarke on the hit TV show "Fantasy Island (1977)" which ran 7 seasons long He was also in a couple of The Planet of The Apes movies. And as you know, and have seen now, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) which to me is the best. What was your favorite TOS movie?

John A

Ohhh I just saw him in that!yes I must see the Monty python films! And airplane!

Tic Toc, thanks for making an effort to avoid spoilers for ST:TMP (even though your original comment wasn't that spoilery). And extra thanks for your early talkie recs, you saved me about 100 hours

The first film while indeed slow is still very enjoyable for me with a great sci fi premise instead of action, not that I am against action but you need to do the director's edition which fixes many glitches and improves much. And Ricardo Montalban was the main villain in the Naked Gun. And in the tradition of Naked Gun you need to watch 'Airplane' and 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail.'

its very enjoyable!

i had NO idea there was an animated series! I just know they shoot a bunch of new series in toronto auditioned for an alien in strange new worlds.. didnt get it!

Ames asked for advice abt which eps to watch before the movies in a livestream, so John and I volunteered. We tried to include the best and most essential eps w/o overwhelming the channel. I'm a fan, but I sympathize with people who aren't, and 79 episodes is a lot to wait out if you're not into it. And even though I'm a ST:TOS fan, I do admit there are some pretty bad ones :) We tried to curate the episodes into a really strong mini-series so Ames will be pumped to watch the movies.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is weird, but it's still kind of beautiful (the Director's Edition is stunning). I think it's pretty important for Ames to get a sense of how the franchise evolved up to Star Trek II. I used to hate ST:TMP when I was a kid, but it's grown on me ever since. :)

I get that TOS is a big commitment but I'm curious if there is a reason she isn't being recommended watching the full series. It' hit-or-miss but always fun

Pro-UN. not pro Nation State

I've read that Star Trek was considered the "Pro" Government TV show while Star wars was anti-government. Would anyone here agree? Disagree? I just think it's what we could have if we got rid of all the corruption...

I'm not much for "old" TV and movies. BUT... Star Trek was always the one thing I could and still love to watch.

So happy you’re enjoying these episodes of “Star Trek”. I need to get the series on DVD or Bluray and binge watch them all over a weekend. Did you know there was an animated series, too? It aired during the 1970s and was really good. It stayed true to the original series. Looking forward to the day you tackle the movies.

57 years Ago! Wow! I think it’s amazing! So thankful for you and JM hooking me up with these awesome episodes!!

I'm so glad you're enjoying these Star Trek episodes, Ames! They really do explore some deep and profound issues on the show! (Thank goodness we avoided the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s!!) Ricardo Montalbán does a great job as Kahn! While it strains credibility that McGivers would so quickly abandon her loyalty to the ship and crew, and that study of the technical manuals would provide sufficient knowledge for someone to take over the ship, I think this is an extremely enjoyable episode. Suspension of disbelief is an important ingredient in the enjoyment of the show! It still blows my mind that this episode aired 57 years ago! Ground-breaking!

I totally agree! I think that’s why it’s a fascinating epi with the genetic engineering! I think Khan is going to evolve that planet FAST lol!!!

Yes, apparently the gold command shirts were chartreuse (greenish-yellow) in real life. I'm guessing the skirts were super short to improve "le ratings" 😄 The handheld scanner is called a tricorder. According to canon it's b/c it has 3 functions (sensing, recording, and computing), but they probably just chose it b/c it sounds cool. Although Vulcans are stronger than humans, I don't think the idea was that Spock is stronger than the super-humans. The Vulcan pinch is supposed to access a nerve that makes humans pass out. I like the theme of the dangers of eugenics/genetic engineering. I imagine within 20-30 years we will face this issue in the real world. That and AI superintelligence are probably the most realistic predictions of all the various sci-fi movies and tv shows. Side-note: don't you love all the beeping and whirring on the Enterprise? Nice futuristic ASMR

OH WOW!

Ricardo Montalban was a very well known actor. He starred in a popular series named Fantasy Island and had many appearances in shows throughout the 70's

Hahahah!!!! I have so MUCH TO LEARN about Star Trek!

One of the best, you'll like this one, wait well I'm sure you liked this one lol. Just realized the reaction paradox, watched but not observed yet, Schroedinger's reaction. Its been a long day already, I need a drink 🤣
