Comments

I gottta for sure

Even though its late I just have to say how much I love the 'bring your daughter to work moment'. So effing dark.

James Rogers

That was a FANTASTIC reaction. I know you have a backlog of edits, but this one is definitely worth editing down, people would be psyched to this on YouTube for sure (I've now seen this, Barbie, Dazed & Confused, Casablanca, Deer Hunter and Wild At Heart. Already worth the Patreon subscription!). (Plus.....I feel like I have an even better grasp on what movies to suggest now!) Thanks, yet again, Ames, LOVED it!!!!

Tic Toc Melody

I just added it on the Google spreadsheet, but I'll put it in here too: The Hunt (2020) with Betty Gilpin and Hilary Swank. Absolutely dark comedy.

I added “Miracle” (2004) to the list. It’s one of my favorites and I highly recommend it. I must admit I have a method to my madness or should I say a madness to my method? 😉 The film choices I make are by design. For example, Valentines Day is next month. I’ll pick more romance-oriented movies. In the summer I’ll go with more blockbuster titles that would be found at your local Blockbuster. I also tend to go for deep cuts like my music. The ones that don’t usually get aired. Then there are movies that used to air on cable or television frequently that have vanished like “Shag: The Movie” (1989). I saw it about a year ago and within the first ten seconds there is a Confederate flag in the intro and I was like, “Ohhh, THAT is why it doesn’t get played on tv anymore.” However, there is nothing racist about the movie and I actually prefer it to “Dirty Dancing”. Plus, Phoebe Cates. Enough said.

For those worried that this would create extra work for Ames -- I could compile the proportionately weighted list in a separate sheet of the Wheel of Wonder spreadsheet. Then Ames could just copy and paste that list into the wheel. So it wouldn't be any extra work for her (aside from spinning the wheel).

I understand what you're saying, but I think member names out of the hat suffers from a similar problem (member picks can also be quite niche w/o broad appeal). The system you describe is popular among reaction channels, but I would prefer that Ames start a higher tier (maybe $20/mo) and draw out of a hat from that group only. That would provide a good incentive for more members to increase their monthly contribution.

You have a good point, Winston. I thought about this exact issue yesterday and I had a bit of a crazy brainstorm. I think the issue Ames is trying to address with the WoW is that some members feel frustrated because their favorite films have zero chance of ever winning a poll. With the wheel, at least they have SOME chance (even if it's a small one). Here's my suggestion: How about after each poll, each vote is converted into a "raffle ticket" (in other words, one spot on the wheel)? So to use the previous Sci-Fi poll as an example, The Thing would get 36 spots on the wheel, 2001: A Space Odyssey would get 28, Mad Max: Fury Road 27 spots, all the way down to Starman (6), Solaris (5), and Outland (5). (The total number of votes was 369.) Then Ames would do two wheel spins and watch the movies that were selected. In this system, the most popular films would have the highest chance of being picked (36/369, or abt 9.8% for The Thing), but even the films with the fewest votes would at least have a small chance of getting picked (5/369 or 1.36%). I think this system strikes a good balance because films are proportionately weighted by the entire membership's interest in them. But longshots still have a chance, so members can nominate the movies they really like instead of trying to guess what might win a poll. Every vote would be important because it would affect the probability of what film gets picked. It would also lead to a greater variety of movies than other reaction sites (which tend to do the same ones over again). And it would create more excitement. Many of us here are sports fans, and one of the great things about sports is the uncertainty of the outcome. Seeing an underdog or Cinderella win (esp when it's your team) is a great feeling. In this proportional lottery system, members could have a similar experience when their "team" (i.e. movie nomination) overcomes the odds to win.

JM63

Just my 2 cents, I think you're running the risk of compiling a very bloated list of thousands of movies, many of which are actually quite niche and don't have wider appeal. Another reaction channel instead selects members names out the hat and each member is allowed to have one currently active recommendation which you can then reference. It's slighter more admin but means members think more carefully about what movie they'd be most excited to see featured, and should keep the list of films tighter & brighter

Mario! I can't find your question about the WOW YT cut on here, but it's in my inbox... The goal is to get these edited for YT but I do everything myself, so right now I focus on poll winners, my picks, AFI.. But long answer. yes I would love these to be on YT so I will strive to get it done!

"contagion" was #1 on Netflix in March of 2020 because of the pandy

Amalia Wolf

gotta be on it !! haha

Amalia Wolf

he is truly an amazing actor! the in scene in what I called "cerebro" the look on his face was testament to his amazing acting ability! He looks familiar but I didn't recognize him!

Amalia Wolf

yes totally! I loved that shot!!!

Jonathan Pryce (Lowry) is one of my favorite stage actors ever. He originated the role of the Engineer in Cameron Mackintosh's Miss Saigon, for which he won a Tony for best actor, opposite Lea Salonga (Aladdin, Mulan). He was also nominated in the early 2000s for My Fair Lady, as one of the best Henry Higgins I've ever seen. He also got to play Juan Peron in Madonna's Evita. This is one of his earlier roles, but there is a hint at his voice talent during the closing shots.

Shawn Goforth

Having seen Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, I knew we could be in for quite a mind trip. One of my favorite scenes was the amazing choreographed paperwork scene which happened outside Kurtzman's office. It appeared to me to be filmed in one continuous shot. I loved how the workers would start watching old films when Kurtzman wasn’t looking, then would instantly jump back into action when the boss opened his door to check on them. Brilliant!

Also, the recent BBC drama "Help" (2023), starring the lovely Jodie Comer. When Covid strikes, things go to H--L in an old folks home. Heart-breaking.

"Outbreak" is Good, so why not "Contagion"? It has an all-star cast AND it mirrors creepily how the Real Covid-19 went down.

william johnson

I did not pick that one, but looking forward to watching it (for the first time). Rotten Tomatoes = 98%, IMDb = 7.9, Metacritic = 84%. I've already previously added my movie suggestions to the spreadsheet. I see that you quickly added the requested movies in the comments above to the spreassheet. You on top of it. Spreadsheet = https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1r_XFnG7Bd7BpENxyrGJ9yfq_zRwHtPlYlBudRMhhJ7g/edit?usp=sharing

JM63

Warcraft (2016)

Mario

i think ya'll are still able to view the list :)

Amalia Wolf

Presumably it's already on your spreadsheet list you posted a while back, but if not: Amadeus. Also: Paris, Texas.

Carl Lyngholm

LOL right! i need one! hahah

Amalia Wolf

I really liked this movie! It was whacky... i kinda got a sense what was happening... couldn't make sense of things, but I think that is the point. It's all hitting you like it is Sam. Im with you on things that take chances. But, I am sure its from a love of film and storytelling and everything not having to be cookie cutter. I used to watch S&E as a kid at my gramas house (only place I watched cable) I should re watch them! I am sure they are on YT!!

Amalia Wolf

Just noticed I misspelled the first word 😅 ment Gosh, not josh.

Jason Vulgamore

I nominate Bully (2001) Also I recommend a firm, wooden, back scratcher 😉

Hail to the King

Amalia Wolf

Josh, where to start: the paper (1994), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016), Project Almanac (2015), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947)[ basically any Danny Kaye movie], Support Your Local Sheriff (1969), Logan Lucky (2017), The Game(1997) [I have the t-shirt for that one]. There are more, but I've taken up too much of your time already.

Jason Vulgamore

👍🏽

Amalia Wolf

thanks! its on the list :)

Amalia Wolf

added!

I remember when this came out. Was cutting edge bizzare and you either loved or hated it. I loved it my GF hated it... Anything that took chances or was unique to me was always welcome. Terry Gilliam is a serious filmmaker but an acquired taste for some. Always brings striking visuals. Siskel and Ebert loved this movie as well I remember..
