Hey Ames if you want to learn more about the Battle of Guadalcanal check out the Kings and Generals channel on YouTube. They have a series called Pacific War week by week. episodes 37 to 63 cover Guadalcanal. Each episode is 15 to 20 minutes and you will understand the battle so much better. Also a great resource for most battles shown in the series The Pacific.

"Old Bill and Guadalcanal." Ames, this one is for you. Dale's father never talked about his WWII experiences on Guadalcanal, but fortunately recorded them for that Library of Congress series, before he passed. Fetzer shared the video with us once, totally astounded by what his father had never told him. His father, at 18, in California, enlisted in the Marines. They found out he worked on his father's ranch. "Are you good with animals?" "I guess." "Okay, you're going to be a dog handler!" "No, no, I want to be a Scout or a machine-gunner." "Well, you'll BE a Scout, with a dog!" He was mad; this wasn't what he signed up for. So, he was sent to Dog School and was assigned his team mate, "Old Bill," a German Shepherd. I later read people donated their dogs for the war effort; "If you don't need him, PLEASE send him back," kids would write. But the decision was made, if a dog didn't make the grade, it was cheaper just to put him down. And what did the Dog think? "I must have been Bad. I'm Sorree. Let me go Home!" "Old Bill" and Fetzer, Sr., went through training and passed with flying colors. A lot of dogs didn't pass. But Fetzer hated it, and Old Bill hated it, too. AND they Hated each other. He knew the dog hated him, because Old Bill bit him, once. They were sent to Guadalcanal and used extensively, for scouting out the enemy. And Fetzer hated that dog, Old Bill, every hour and every day, until the day Old Bill took a bullet for Fetzer, meant for him. He would never forget "Old Bill."
