Caught another installment of Babs's monthly Figure Drawing Club today, which felt more like medicine than recreation after the events of the last 72 hours.

I know what to do at figure drawing. The brief is very simple: there is model, draw model on paper with pencil and hand. I don't hesitate when I face the model. I know how to start. I know where to go. Look for shapes. Follow contours. Find the line of action. Consider weight distribution. Imagine cylinders, overlap them. Assess light sources. A million tiny choices drilled into my body, my brain, my arm, my eyes, my wrist, my fingers.

I want to understand that even if I couldn't do anything that felt useful when my dad was in crisis, I can still make something beautiful—even as I doubt the utility of beauty in the face of loss.

I want control over something. I want to make it make sense.
