I'm still not ok with the end of this episode. Even if I had the impression even before it that the writers would go deeper with the characters, I didn't think they would go that far, that fast, with Rick. Like, at the end, he tried to ki** himself. It's so meaningful about how he feels. For me, it's for sure related to his break up with Unity, but even more for what she said. He thinks he changed by getting older, he said it himself, so to have her saying that he didn't and then to have Beth, his best defender, telling him that he doesn't change, that she has to act like her mother acted with Rick… It's the confirmation for him that he's all alone and has no one to share his way to see things, that no one understands him and sees his efforts.
Jerry coming back at the end and not noticing that something bad happened, it's logical because he's used to seeing him, drunk in his garage, but it also means a lot : they are so used to seeing him like that, that no one can help him, see his distress… I really think the writers are gonna go deeper and darker with Rick, to maybe analyze his depression, its cause and all.

So let's write a story, a made-up story about what happened there at the end... using speculation, So Rick thought it was the end of his rope for him. He had to make things right before he leaves so he pulled out that creature in statis. He revives it to wake it up. It appears to be in great pain. Rick is petting it as if... well, we can see Rick is capable of love because he clearly loves this creature who is in great pain. Probably he was working to save it and he kept it in statis until such time as he can work on the cure again. Since this is the end of Rick and he's leaving for good, he cannot leave this work unfinished. The one thing he does is to end this creature's suffering before he goes to join it... But clearly he passes out before the machine fully activates. What is, what was this creature? It didn't look human. Some speculate it was a "Cronenberg" but it looks too small for that. It's possible it is a human in distilled form, perhaps it is the essence of a person and if cured it could be restored to normal human state. Clearly Rick has been trying to save it. For the creature it was torture to live and because it was the end of Rick, he had to finally end its suffering. Okay if it were some human in distilled form, who could it be? Was it family? Speculation alert! Dismount, dismount! What was that device? Did it have another use? It looks like it was powered by a red crystal. Rick had two crystals. We see how the machine works and the crystal is destroyed after one use. Could it have another purpose? Maybe it facilitates sending the person into a Valhalla state, a sort of after-life dimension. Perhaps Rick was to join the creature in that other world where it would be restored and they could be together again. Let's end the story here... -signed, in speculation.
