Hello !
To say that I was a mess at the end of this episode is not even close to the truth. This episode was divided in two parts : the Alaska plan failing and finding a way to save Max. While she was preparing herself all along to die. All of these goodbyes, in letters but also for real, with her mom, with Lucas, it was already rough for me to handle, but that final scene. It was beautifully done, written, played, filmed, and it hurt me hard. Even more because Max saved herself.
You can say the music did the job (and yes, like everyone, since then, I listened to it A LOT), but in the end, it's not. For me, there is a real subtitle behind Vecna : he's tormenting people haunted by something bad they did, playing with their mind and health, to finally take them with him, to death. A real meaning around that process being close to depression, suicidal ideas etc. And Max released herself from Vecna when she thought about reasons to stay alive, with these good memories with her friends, and she was the one to run away from him.
