I didn't expect at all to have a full flashback episode right now but I'm so glad we had it. To confirm that Annie, Reiner and Bertholdt were sent to do that mission but had doubts even before beginning it (like Annie who just wanted to go home, so many times), and to also explore more of Reiner's past and psychology. For me, he's maybe more the true nemesis of Eren than Zeeke can be : both Reiner and Eren just wanted to go out of their walls, to fight for their people, they are both sons of mixed parents (one eldian, one marleyan), and they are both full of doubts.
Reiner wanted to be a Warrior, thinking it would help his dad to recognize him, but he discovered that no, nothing can change his blood, and even more, that he was not supposed to be a Warrior. The guy was not supposed to exist, and also to still be alive. So many times death was coming for him and he was saved by his friends, and Marcel was the first one. So, to have him at the end, trying to kill himself, it's logical, as the fact that he's not doing it. Do you want me to talk about the reveal at the end ? Ok… I KNEW IT.
