When Eren was not able to handle balancing on the 3D maneuver gear, he and his friend from his hometown, Bertholdt, took Eren on a small hike on top of a hill to cheer him up. He helped Armin carry his backpack in the training montage at the start of episode 4 when all other characters from the 104th Cadet Corps were introduced to us. Also, he was helping Eren train in close combat with the knife. Keith Shadis (the instructor of the 104th Cadet Corps) described Reiner as a dependable guy whom everyone looks up to. He is kind of their big brother in the squad. I agree with you about the growth we have seen from Jean. He cared only about himself in the start and wanted a life inside the interior as part of the Military Police, but now he is a member of the Survey Corps and has taken more of a team player role.
