2025-08-25 22:47:59 +0000 UTCI didn’t expect you’d seen Shaolin Soccer! I love that movie too — it’s one of my all-time favorites. It came out in 2001, right in the middle of Hong Kong’s prolonged economic slump following the Asian Financial Crisis. Times were really, really tough back then, and the film brought people some much-needed laughs and relief. Stephen Chow wasn’t just the lead actor — he also directed the film, as he did with many of his other works. He was already a huge star in the late ’90s, but Shaolin Soccer took things to another level. He was (and still is) my favorite Hong Kong star. By the way, his style of humor is often called "mo lei tau" in Hong Kong — meaning nonsensical, absurd, and totally unpredictable. That’s part of what makes his movies so unique. He actually started out as a children’s TV host, and grew up watching tons of Japanese manga and anime (as did many Hongkongers). A lot of his wild ideas and comedic timing were clearly inspired by that. His influence and style can still be seen in many comedians and filmmakers who came after him. Oh, and by the way — have you seen his other movie Kung Fu Hustle? It’s another classic!

2025-07-15 13:44:28 +0000 UTCZou just means elephant, So the island is literally just called: Elephant (LOL) BUT! the nuance comes from the fact that Oda lovessss to do like... puns and wordplay that cross over between multiple languages, So it sounding like "zoo" and there only being animals on the back of a massive "zou" (elephant) -- is almost 100% intentional I'd reckon, It's always hard to tell what's intended and what's not! But, this is one of those things where it's pretty easy to make the logical jump
