Devlog 62 (What's happening with the update?)

Hey guys, how's it been?

It's been a pretty busy time for me, lots to do for this next one, lots I want to cover.

I'm not exactly sure when this one is coming out or even approximately how long it's gonna take. Could be a long time, or a not so long time, it really just depends on what the cut off point is gonna be for this update. Like I said at the end of the last update, we'll be getting further into the 'Twins arc' now which I've got a fairly extensive plan for, but how deep into it I want to go next update is still up in the air. Things will be getting pretty hectic and pretty intense for a while when it starts in earnest, and it will only continue to ramp up even when it's done. So I want to finish all of my side route plans before that happens, which will definitely take a while, which means I can either make next update really long and cover those side routes on top of making good headway into the main arc, or, I can make next update not so long, cover those side routes and only make a little bit of headway into the main arc, or something in between. Obviously longer update = longer dev time.

So yeah, I'm not really sure on this one, or when next update is coming out, but feel free to give your thoughts, I'll let you know when I decide, probably.

I like a mix of update lengths. It makes the longer ones feel more impactful, and prevents escalation (i.e. no feeling of a need to constantly one up yourself). I think a shorter update right now would be a better fit, since we had the diamond so recently.

I prefer waiting for a fuller product. I say you should take as long as you need and fully flesh out the side routes and main story until you are happy. Others have said it already but bigger updates allow you to make a more drawn out and richer product. Also its nice to play an update and realize it last multiple hours as opposed to merely being a hour or two update. Lastly, by spending a few months or half a year in a update you may get some new ideas on how to flesh out a scene or connect something to another idea that you could never do if you are too focused on pumping out updates in a 'reasonable' amount of time. So take your time and don't feel pressured to release the update even a day sooner. As long as you put time and effort into the product we can't ask for anymore more. Lastly, keep us updated to keep up attention.

Longer. Preferably because there seems to be a lot of experimentation in between large updates. Primarily because of the creativity in the side content so there's less plot holes. This way, the main arc can continue and perhaps the side stories will cross into it. I don't mind waiting for a longer update. I can understand the instant gratification but there's absolutely no need to rush this. If it went from 0.961 to 1.0 and it took well over 6-12months. I'd wait. HOWEVER, I did enjoy the loop placed for side content in lieu of the main story...but I still could wait. Especially given all that transpired had me playing for a few hours which felt really satisfying to wait for.

Nyx

I don't mind waiting if you decide to include both the main story and the side content. Both are equally important, but the side stories help increase the MC's stats for the main story.

Go long

I agree

I would love to see them simultaneously released in one update and wait. However if that’s what you choose to do then please take your time and don’t feel rushed. I would go out on a limb and say we would all like to see you have the time you need to make the update what you want it to be. (Long or short though, it will be great)

Sharkz7696

Your choice I am down for any one just both are good I ideas but lot of time so I will leave it to you.

you the GOAT

I'd go for the main route primarily which will give the side routes and the new knowledge from the main routes more flavor.

So, from what I understand, you are planning on finishing off the side routes in the next update, no matter what, because the Twins arc is going to transition into bigger story content. Which I am guessing would feel out of place if you didn't do it now. In that case, I think you should focus on finishing the side routes first, and when your done working on them, decide how much story content you want to add. Since you are planning on adding some story content anyways, you can always decide the amount later right?

Dragonlord 1024

Honestly I’d rather have a shorter side quest focused update, both because I want the next update asap and because the update where you finished off all of the college quests was one of my favorites

I'd prefer longer personally, every time theres an update I get sucked into the world and I want to keep consuming it for as much time as possible. But I understand if other people want faster and shorter.

Wolf

I'm 100% down for waiting longer for both main and side. Both options are great but being able to experience both the side content and main content in the same update just flows well, side content helps build up for main and having those together helps make an update feel complete.

CrayneLored23

I want to vote for longer but it seems more people are amicable to the idea of a shorter update so I don't want to be the odd one out. WW, do what you do best.

Knight Of Void

I love your game, the world you've created, and the characters involved in the story. (Alright, Demi and Tiffany kinda creep me out, but I couldn't see the game without them) Any time you want to devote to the project is gravy for me. If you would feel more comfortable making large content releases so you don't have to bug test as frequently, I'm down with that. I'm too invested at this point to be upset about a long wait between releases.

Honestly Weird, I want to say shorter to separate the Side Routes from the Main Story. If you can delve more into the characters already around us, it will give the players more time to get to know more about them (hero members and main cast). It will also lead to events being more impactful if something DOES happen to someone. With the time between the side routes and the main story. People can discuss and we can let those events and choices with the side cast settle, so we can go into the next update with a stronger bond with everyone.

Ploot Ploot

Exactly.

I'd be on board with more of a "filler" update. Something like what we got at the end of Act 1? Where the day just repeats ad infinitum so you can finish out all the current side routes. Clear the slate so you (and eventually the player) can focus solely on the important story bits.

Side arks first bro

orja

The main story is definitely the thing I am always the most interested in. With that said, maybe focusing on the side routes and giving them more attention in their own update might be a good idea. I feel like some of the characters could use more depth and development, like how they are truly feeling about the ongoing changes in the world and what they plan next.

Raikin

After playing through the last long update where I thought it would end multiple times just to be surprised to see it keep going I'm all for longer updates since they've been worth it each time.

Skeleto

Yeah, also not opposed to this either.

Ploot Ploot

I'd rather get a shorter overall update with more of a focus on the side routes.
