The August 2015 Many A True Nerd Patroncast

Happy August everyone, and welcome to the August Patroncast, with updates on all the MATN things, including the moves toward giving the channel my undivided attention!

It's 11:30pm UK time, so I'll be replying to most comments tomorrow.

And, sadly, no photo of Tabby today - she's sulking under the sofa because Claire went to the Nine Worlds convention this weekend.

That game has a little bit of a learning curve to it...

PointyHairedJedi

omg I love you both! how about ck2 collab?

stratfish

I do plan to make hoodies etc available later this year!

Many A True Nerd

I'd love to see a big budget scifi movie with a dvd special feature with all the strings and harnesses digitally readded to the film ;)

Amy Mo

:D I love that you have a many a true hoodie for yourself! i was just telling my partner that it's a shame that you don't have mercy because I would love to have something like that. :3

Amy Mo

I'll be using a print on demand service, so there can be as many designs as I want, so, yes, loads of obscure ones :)

Many A True Nerd

If you do organise merch, would it be possible to make some one-offs of well-known moments from your series? I want a "gnomed!" shirt.

KMS

I think a lot depends on the kinds of games you pick out - GTAV or Mount & Blade multiplayer has the potential to get lots of people involved at once, for example, but then it's probably going to mostly be a big free-for-all. Something like Payday 2 on the other hand is going to be a lot more focused, but you can only have 3 other people in at any one time. Someone gave me the advice that "your time is valuable" as well, worth bearing in mind when considering how much time you want to give over to multiplayer community stuff and what kind of pricing gates you might want to put in place.

PointyHairedJedi

It's something I need to figure out after I do the first big properly announced community playdate - how many people want to be involved, and how do I select who gets to take part. I'd like to keep them open to everyone if I can. We'll see.

Many A True Nerd

Thanks; I've seen a bunch where people have a whole bunch of them and it becomes pretty messy and confusing, though I honestly was not expecting the top bracket to be as popular as it as been for the spaces there are.

PointyHairedJedi

Nice use of the reward tiers - looks like it's working really well for you :)

Many A True Nerd

Y'know, a sinking ship isn't always that bad - if it's truly sinking, a decent redundancy payout can be nice.

Many A True Nerd

Well, the company is quite small, there were 30 people before the leaving started. Now there's about 23. If the two of the three (me) new starts leave, then it'll be down to 21. That includes our Sheffield office. It's all because a guy who was brought into doing impartial finance advice made our new CEO (a push over who gets really nervous when someone confronts him on anything) into a yes-man. I feel like I've just boarded a sinking ship :P

Sandwich247

And must be weird to have all that leaving - never really experienced it, as I've always worked for small companies - always avoided corporates - so there can only be so many leaving at once.

Many A True Nerd

I'd heard good things about Shadowplay - Nerdcubed's PC recording tool of choice, I believe.

Many A True Nerd

You can now buy computer bits without having to pay VAT! Off to Ebuyer's business site for you then :D For recording, Shadowplay is pretty great, it's free with a GTX graphics card and it has minimal performance impact. A lot of people in my work have been leaving, 7 people in the last 5 months, with one of the new guys, started 2 weeks after me, just got offered another job with fewer hours, better benefits, a 9k yearly salary rise and a 3k signing bonus will probably be leaving while the other new start, joined about 2 weeks ago, is complaining that she is doing the standard support leg-work and help desk do, even though her job position was as a project lead. Lot's of people seem to be leaving now-days :P

Sandwich247

I launched on Patreon around April, so technically it's been my job since then, but it was building up to that point for the better part of two years, from a hobby to where it is now. Also, I meant to say - I've mostly been using Bandicam, which is generally very reliable, though in the last few days I've been looking at Dxtory too as Bandicam does freak out a bit if the client window it's recording closes before you can tell it to finish (but that's only a particular issue with two games I cover). Bandicam's separate audio channel recording feature is one I find useful - I still use Audacity for my main mic output, but having that same output encoded as a channel in the video file makes syncing them up particularly useful, as well as being a backup if Audacity derps out (which fortunately has been rare for me too).

PointyHairedJedi

I didn't know you were full-time - how long have you been doing that?

Many A True Nerd

Interesting as always; and, if you ever get the mad urge to do some PC online multiplayer collab stuff, I would most certainly be interested in that. Also, yes, it is indeed a bit scary when you look at your channel page and can say for the first time "well, this is my job now!"

PointyHairedJedi

Jon: In the words of Led Zeppelin: Ramble On!

Steve2112

I may be weird but i appreciate his solo videos (excluding MATC) more than collaborations. Ill trust your artistic genious though.

Cuda Baird

That sounds like a terrible buisness model, they better 5 hour long videos. I just upped my patronage but i would never on that rollercoaster.

Cuda Baird

Thats why i give him the donations, mmm takes me back.

Cuda Baird

I definitely agree, i love the inner ramblings of MATN, ramble on.

Cuda Baird

I own the Only One right now. I'm going to get some merch set up once I have the time to do it, after I've left the day job.

Many A True Nerd

Think i need a MATN hoodie bud. Take my monies

Dean McVicar

Rambling is fine, you have a lot to discuss!

Daniel Mahoney

It's like your favourite movie, but with the strings added back in with special effects.

Many A True Nerd

Actual Many a True Nerd water drinking? Worth the monthly donation!

Gwendolyn, hi jo

Good luck with the life changes, and the tax office ;-) Thanks for making this patreon thing monthly. There's another guy I would like to support, but he's made it per video. That's better for him of course, but means I can't know from month to month how much I'll be spending. Since the minimum donation is $1, I'm basically committing to buy every track he ever produces. So I doubled my contribution to you instead. (Don't get excited; it might buy you a bag of chips once a month.)

Soronlin

I'm honestly not sure when I'll next be in the USA - I have been to a couple of game shows in the UK, and when I do, I do say I'm going, and I wear my MATN hoodie, but I've never had anyone recognise me yet.

Many A True Nerd

I will try it once I have the time to do so - but I think there's a clear pattern that my best work is heavily edited (Kill Everything, Why Not Wednesday, one-offs), whereas the unedited stuff - though I still hold it's good - like Nicole, or roguelikes - isn't as consistently high quality. I reckon I'm at my best when I can carefully edit, so livestreaming wouldn't be my best stuff, but I'll gladly try it out.

*fistbump*

Many A True Nerd

Congratulations on the career move!

atforrest

1) I look at your videos as entertainment so if you "fake" the game then I look as that like you found a more entertaining way to present it. However I do happen to believe it also. 2) Thoughts on a meet and greet? The next time you are in the USA it would awesome. 3) Please do make a video on Absolution. It was the only Hit Man I ever played and I thought it was a decent game, but I didn't really like it. 4) Stepping up my Patreon since you put in your notice!

SpeakOfTheJoker

I liked hearing about how you record things, thank you!

Erin Trickett

Definitely keep the rambling for sure!

Caleb Craig

I enjoy the rambling! Thank you for everything.

Rob Blatt

The rambly(ie?) pod casts are the best kind anyway. It really shows the passion I think.

Samuel

You spoke of Amy livestreaming your collaboration, have you thought about using a site like Twitch or something similar alongside YouTube? The fact that you do live commentary on videos would be helpful in that regard, plus you already have the experience of recording the greatest livestream of all time.

Ken Goward

20-minute videos are fine, Jon. Ramble away!

Andy Snyder

I am going to donate more to hopefully make this a reality! The dream is real!

Ian Gaffney

Congrats on your impending new career!

Andrea Reed
