Many A True Nerd Patroncast - July 2015

Much later than I originally planned, and exclusively for the Patreon community, the first of the monthly MATN Patroncasts - a much more personal look into the channel! The future! Rambling! Other things! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy8-DABMEx4

Many A True Nerd Patroncast - July 2015

I appreciate this YouTube Era may be only a temporary thing, like so many websites. I'll keep one foot in work, and also look to make contacts in the game industry. It's just that my current job and YouTube combined is too much - I need a different job to facilitate me doing what I love.

Thanks for the video, it's more insightful about what's going on in the world of MaTN. Whilst I would love to say "Whoo, More Videos" (and whilst I'm 100% sure you of all people could make it work), I'd like to just add a bit and ask if it's sustainable in the long term for you. Whilst it's a great experience in the short term and I'm sure people from all over enjoy your videos, there's always a couple of issues in my mind. I've seen over people switch to focussing purely on videos to find themselves burn out all the quicker... and whilst people have been saying that the youtube bubble is going to burst soon (touch wood it doesn't), be sure to keep any skills honed/don't burn any bridges in case you ever need to fall back on them. Edit: But as everyone else has said, as long as your happy and you look after yourself health wise, I'll be one of the ones to fully support you :D

As long as you're happy with doing youtube, then this should be a good change for you! I wish you luck, too! Also, I just love the Nicole run because of you pointing out the problems with the plot/concept and doing something different from other youtubers I see. And while I understand why you can't do weird Dating Sims all the time, I hope you do another at some point. Deadly Premonition counts as something similar in my mind, though, because it's so weird and you point out just how odd it all is. I'm a classics major, too, so I would LOVE a classics project from you.

Oh, I'll be doing blind first-play on launch day, absolutely. Part-time shouldn't be too hard - I've got ok skills to do freelancing.

Part-time I hope you can get, it's something I was angling for myself because it' is - along with Patreon, as you said - a set amount of income you know you can rely on being relatively constant. I'm definitely looking forward to your Fallout 4 content, by the way! I expect though you'll just want to play around with it a bit first to get a feel of it, unless you have plans for a recorded let's-play first playthrough (which may be not a terrible idea).

I should also say, you're right about high living costs - I'm still in SE England, but we've moved slightly out of London, so not as bad as it was. My lifestyle in general is cheap too, which helps.

It'll be a slow transition - I may yet have months to serve out the existing contract, then after a brief period of YouTube only (coinciding with Fallout 4), I'll extremely likely look to be going part-time in January.

I was in something of a similar boat before I launched on Patreon too - unemployed, but if I'd managed to land a job it would have meant cutting back dramatically on the time I spent on YouTube. You don't really appreciate how time consuming it can all be until you actually try it yourself; if you're really enjoying it (which you do come across as doing) I think committing more to the channel would be a positive thing - but as a fan I might be slightly biased there! Of course at the end of the day it all comes down to finances, where I live I can get by on Patreon + YouTube; I'd take a long hard look at your money situation before you make a final decision as to what you want to focus on. Best of luck, either way.

Thanks for the update, Jon. Work/life balance is incredibly important and it's good to hear you're thinking about your health and happiness long term. Keep up the good work!

You've got to take care of you and Claire and Tabby first. Best of luck, fingers crossed for everything to work well for you. Looking forward to what's coming up.

Oh yes, and this is an unlisted video, so it is exclusively for you guys :)
