Overall, a modest take on all of the original 151 Pokemon. Neat to know the one's that are your favorite, and honestly the only take that's definitely a hot take is the one on Dragonite. I like Dragonite, tho at the same time it's might be cool to see them do an alternative form that leans more towards the design of Dragonair and Dratini.

2025-03-06 23:15:36 +0000 UTCI’m so late listening to this :P while I could go on and on about Pokemon and how much I agree with your opinions (you have great opinions ;D) I will try to keep it short lol I’m happy someone else appreciates the squirtle line 😤❤️ they’ve been some of my favorites since day one. There’s this ultimate favorite pokemon list thing you can fill out online using every pokemon and every gen. Listening to you talk about gen one made me think maybe you’d like it and can do a ramble on it :) you can even save the pic once it’s done to share it. Aaaaaand yeah I agree with the dragonair/dragonite thing. I LOVE dragonite (don’t hate me for that) it’s one of my top ten. It’s the og dragon, the original sprite looked way cooler, first pseudo legendary, and while he’s goofy now he’s so cute….but they fucked up turning the elegant dragonair into a derpy looking dragon. If anything they should’ve been separate lines ya know dratini could’ve been like the magikarp line and dragonite could’ve been just this super strong one of a kind dragon by itself.

It’s always fun to talk about Pokemon with others so I had fun reading your thoughts on them too :D I feel you on the butterfree line. It does make more sense for a caterpillar to evolve into a butterfly than a gnat. I’m leaning more towards the art style too but it is an interesting thought! I also get a big 90s vibe from clafairy and clafable. I think it’s the little wings and face but either way I just love them!! ❤️ Oh boy, the shiny mudkip hits harder than the bellsprout ngl. Skipping on a shiny starter is rough! 😭 lol. I didn’t know that about Farfetched so thanks for sharing! I love learning little things like that :D I’m really happy to know I’m not the only one with opinions on dragonite. To be fair, if he was part of a separate evolution line I probably wouldn’t have such strong feelings about it. But he really is just so out of place with dratini and dragonair! ; o ; Ok, the idea of mew just talking mad trash on mewtwo made me laugh more than it should xD I just imagine her cute squeaky voice but saying just the most terrible things lmao 🤣

Pokemon is the video game series that I think I'm closest to and so getting to hear so much chatter about it is nice, especially in this comfy format. I got lots of thoughts on the Gen 1 guys myself, but if I shared them all I might as well upload a ramble of my own for how long it'd take. A bunch of them are pretty close to yours, though! Some highlights (and I know this is a lot but there's still so much more I'm leaving out for brevity): - I was always Team Squirtle growing up, at all the different stages, so I feel some vindication hearing you batting for Blastoise a bit here ^^ Totally agree about the 90s energy on Wartortle, the dude looks like they'd enjoy the sunglasses look more than the Squirtle Squad! - Butterfree being mixed up with Venomoth hasn't been stated in official sources, people just notice a lot of overlapping design bits about em and talk about it online. If you ask me I think the caterpillar turning into the butterfly was intended, and that Ken Sugimori just has a distinct style that comes through noticeably in his designs for different bugs; but even that much is just me speculating the other way, it could totally be a true rumor. - On Rattata, it took me just a moment to think about what you were saying until my brain just screamed at me "MY BODY IS A WEAPOOON!" and I was like oh yeah, I know that one!" Wonderful song, didn't expect to like it nearly as much as I did but it grew on me pretty fast. - Dude I LOVE the Buff Diglett meme, it's one of my favorites! The video of that one guy at Dream Con will live in my head forever 🤣 - Love hearing you gush about the round and cute fairies, I can tell there's a lot of just emotion behind it ^^ I still can't decide if I like Clefable or Clefairy better, but both of them are super cute. Clefable especially to me feels like she *looks* like a Gen 1 pokemon, like, I can't put my finger on it, but she's very 90s in a way that a lot of others just aren't to me. - BIG SAD ON THE SHINY WEEPINBELL OH NOOOOOO! I got a similar experience where a friend reset away from a shiny Mudkip when I let them start a new playthrough of Sapphire cause they thought the game was bugged, so I feel the pain. Sometimes we just don't know better until it's too late to avoid the tragedy 😭 - Farfech'd hitting the Miku Miku Beam is now living rent free in my mind, thank you for that 🤣🤣 I love how they translated its name, too, the English added a pun that was there in the visual design but not the Japanese name. The design is based on an old Japanese idiom, their version of something being "too good to be true". They'd say it's "a duck providing its own onion/leek" because at the time the proverb was made, duck stew with leek was a pretty popular dish and so getting both ingredients at once would be too good to be true. In other words, you'd use that idiom to describe something that's a bit... *Far-fetched* <0< And then I just love how this duck just owns it, like "yeah I'm delicious and bite sized, fuck you gonna do about it? I'll smack you with this thing bruv don't even try" - "Tentacles are fun to draw, giggedy" 😳😳 Care to elaborate? Suuurely it's just because of how boneless and dynamically shaped they are, lol 🫣🫣🫣 - Kingler just has a completely slept on design, I don't think I appreciated how cool it was when I was younger and I don't think enough people do today. So many joints and joins is just intimidating in its own way, the big claw going on is sick as hell, and I love how the shape sort of makes its body look like a jawline for an extremely proud and protruding chin. Must be good to be king 👑 - I think Dragonite is fun in his own, goofy way, but it's SUCH a jarring change from the elegant, beautiful Dragonair or the cute Dratini that I have to imagine it was a mistake. Poor guy just doesn't fit with the rest of the family, man. Even now, whenever I'm playing a game and going for Dex Completion, I always feel bad evolving my Dragonair because I'm dooming it to a life that's completely different from what it was. That Homer Simpson analogy is absolutely spot-on, right down to the part where it gets more and more cartoony and caricature-ized over the decades. - Mew is cute, and that's all I really have to say. Loved the little "mew mew" sounds imitating her, those were also cute. Incoming Mew audio when?? I do remember something that I thought made a funny situation, in the original script for the first movie Mew was supposed to speak human like Mewtwo does, and the lines she was supposed to say were like calling Mewtwo a cheap imitation, second-class, not supposed to exist, etc. It's kind of like a comedy sketch that I love to laugh at, imagining that even after the decision to change the script was made, that's still what she's saying but in pokespeak, so we hear her mewing and think it's cute but the whole time she's just straight-up calling Mewtwo racial slurs.

The seaweed like tail in Squirtle and then having it get longer in Wartortle and the Beta Evolution is a pretty cool representation of minogame from Japanese folklore.

XD No hate to anyone who likes Dragonite, we can each have our own opinions and I respect you ❤️ BUT HAVING SAID THAT. WTF Pokemon? How can a beautiful, elegant water dragon turn into THAT? lol 😂 Maybe I wouldn’t dislike it so much if it was part of it’s own/different evolution line. It just didn’t belong with dratini and dragonair.

Definitely not heretical! Haunter is a cutie too. Honestly I love all three equally. Gengar is chubby though and I love chubby :3

I had a lot of fun with it so I’m glad you all seemed to like it too :D I wish I could remember where I got that plushie. He was pretty big thinking about it. Granted I was a kid but I remember him being big enough to cuddle up with like a body pillow almost lol. I didn’t know that about wartortle! I’ll have to check out the beta design. I tried googling it but there’s a lot of people making their own version so I want to verify the actual one haha! Any recommendations on where to see the official beta design? I’m really not sure what they were thinking with Jynx. A snow woman maybe? Either way it was just a big miss for me. I’m so sorry for ruining your image of Cloyster haha! 🤣 I just couldn’t help it. There’s too many memes and it doesn’t help that Pokemon literally had a couple battle where the girl had a cloyster and her boyfriend had an onyx. I see you Pokemon- you’re not as innocent as you let on lmao. I’m standing my ground with Dragonite!! lol. It does make me happy that we had some similar takes though :D I would also very much like for there to be a regional variant where dragonair can stay that way, or even go a different route like male/female. Just something to keep that majestic/feminine charm that I love ✨

It really does make sense when you look at their outlines- I love it! ❤️ I also feel you on the inanimate objects. It took me a while to get behind them tbh. It really wasn’t until litwick and sinistea that I started to get on board. And I’m sorry, but rotom being like a lawnmower and stuff is just silly xD No hate against Moltres, it’s a pretty bird design for sure! I just feel the other two are more fantasy/creature like and enjoy them a tad bit more :P Looks like we all agree on Mr. Mime though. I don’t think anyone likes him…except Ash’s mom 😂

He’s very cute and cartoony in it too but something about the art I really enjoy. It just fit his esthetic better imo! I’ve always wanted a shiny beedrill. That green color on him just makes him look so scary and fierce and I love it! Kinda like a radioactive bug- just so cool ✨

I don't have the time to measure out a full response, buuut that's probably for the best considering how much I could say here haha~ Overall I think there's only maybe two of your takes that I'm not entirely on-board with, and even then it's not like an opposing opinion persay, more of a "I don't particularly have strong feelings on that one way or the other" situation. xD BUT. I agree with you SO FUCKING HARD on the dratini line. Dragonair is *gorgeous* and has been one of my favourite pokemon for all time, and I have always just despised what they did to her in Dragonite. You are probably the first person I've heard try to articulate basically my same feelings on the matter, so all I can say is Hell Yeah. Go off, girl. Dragonair deserved better.

I think my least favorite from gen 1 are Jynx and Mr. Mime, they just creep me out. I think the world would be a better place if they didn't exist. Also it might be heretical to say this but I prefer Haunter to Gengar.

I dropped everything I was doing for this one lol It's no secret that I love pokemon, so this was such an awesome surprise! Typically when I listen to rambles here or elsewhere, I open up my notes and write a word or two so I know what I want to react/reply to. There's just so much here that I told myself to limit it to small amount otherwise I won't shut the fuck up lol I love Charizard, I've brought it up before but he's always been my favorite. For the same reasons too, dragons are awesome. I've done several runs of games where I do dragon or dracanic pokemon only and have MegaZard X or Y as my Ace. But you're right, he probably wouldn't be my favorite if my ribbon master wasn't a Charizard. And I had so many Charizard plushies back in the day. I think we probably had the same one because I had a large one and it's neck eventually gave out too. I think Blastoise is my least favorite of the original starters. He used to be my second favorite, but one day I found out that Wartortle was supposed to have a completely different final evolution. I looked up the beta design and it looks so freaking cool, it also made more sense too. Looking at Blastoise just reminds me of what could have been. Overall my least favorite of the original 151 is Jynx. It's a contender for my least favorite overall too. So, I had to pause the video when you brought up Cloyster. I didn't get it. I guess when I first saw Cloyster as a kid, I was a nice and innocent boy and my image of it was never tainted. But then I looked up an image of it and I got what you meant right away 😮💨 Thanks a lot Ali. Lmao We were on the same page for so many things, some best friend level takes were happening... But then you got to Dragonite and now I think we have to fight :P As much as I love Dragonite, who is actually a really cool pokemon, I unfortunately see where you're coming from lol I would love to see a split/regional evolution of Dragonair where it keeps its majestic qualities and becomes some sort of beautiful blue dragon. I actually used to hate Dragonite too, but then I got a hidden ability one on my team and I fell in love with it. I loved this. So yeah, I hope you eventually make one for every generation. Pretty fitting that you made this on the same week as pokemon day. Looking forward to the next one!

Would love to see you cover more Gens in the future. :D I’ve heard about the Venonat to Butterfree theory too, and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the original plan during early development - they really do share so many similarities. Same with Clefable and Gengar, that whole shadow theory is just too perfect. Gen 1 rumors were wild! Still holding out for that Mew under the truck... :/ Also, I totally get what you mean about Pokemon designs feeling boring when they're too close to realistic animals, humans, or objects. For me, it’s more about object based designs - I just can't get into Revavroom or Klefki. (Though Honedge is the exception - it's a sword that wields itself. That's just badass!) And poor Moltres! I agree it's probably the weakest of the three birds in Gen 1, but calling it "just a phoenix" feels a bit harsh. :( As for my Gen 1 favorites, I’d have to go with Cubone and Eevee. Cubone just has such a strong, emotional design, and Eevee is way too cute and cuddly - how could anyone not love it? :< Least favorite? Gotta be Mr. Mime. Sorry, but he's just plain creepy. xD

Gen 1 all the classics so hard to choose my favorite of them but if I had to do a top 5 evo lines charzard and pikachu and the eeveelutions (especially joltean) are a given magicarp and dratini I agree dragonite is a downgrade from its prior evolutions but I still think it’s cool but mostly cause I’m partial to dragons but also I have a dragonite with card art that makes it look way cooler and less cartoony then most dragonite cards and thee in game models make it look normally but man nearly all the gens ones are so iconic it’s hard to choose. Beedrill is probably the coolest bug type Pokémon to me. I know raticate is ugly but he was my last Pokémon standing against ho oh in heart gold back in the day and he clunched the win so I got a soft spot for the rat. I hate Mr Mime he’s always so disturbing. enjoyed listening while eating some popcorn and a 0cal vitamin water. you definitely should do every generation gen 2 has so many Pokémon I love in it like Mareep flaffy sneasel entai scizor steelix umbreon and tyranitar to name a few of my favorite gen 2s although I’m definitely gonna needa refresher on gen 7 and onward though.
