Ali rambles: movies & female anime characters :)

There were more manga series that I forgot to mention but some of them are pretty old now (back when I was a teen) so I doubt they are still being published xD

I hope you all enjoy my little ramble of movies and some female characters in anime! Like I mentioned, I thought this was a good way to warm up my voice for a roleplay. What better way to prep than to chat with you all? :P

Let me know if you've seen either of the movies I mentioned. Feel free to also let me know how you feel about any anime characters of if maybe I was being a little too harsh in my critique lol

Comments

Haha, I feel you Joker! I'm also a little behind at the moment. I worked a little late yesterday, and my throat is hurting like I knew it would so I'm a little slow at the moment. I'm currently catching up on some comments and such. I like doing that though since it's always nice to read what everyone has to say. I think other than the creation part that's my favorite thing since it's nice to hear all your thoughts and opinions on stuff :) Oh man, I agree about Anko! What they did to her was dirty lol. As for Misa, part of me is happy to know she's still getting love! If it's like me, it's probably her fashion sense that hooks them in. So long as they don't get an unhealthy obsession with an ass hole guy who wants to become God then it's A-Ok in my book! lol :P

I agree Skelly! I think it's alright to have a good supporting character if they are written well. I think Misa was given a good story- simple but still good! It was just a bit frustrating knowing the power she could have used if she wanted to. I know it would have made the series dramatically different, but it would have been neat to see, or at least maybe an alternate universe? I know that's asking a lot though haha! Your comment about my stories means a lot, I appreciate that! ^_^ I do find it a lot of fun to try different things as I get easily bored too. I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping to the same stuff if you like doing it but after so many times I start to feel like it's not as fun, so I want to do something else for a bit! As for self inserts, I have mixed feelings about them. I've seen them done really well and I've seen them done not so good. I think the genre and intent matters a lot when it comes to self inserts, and your ability to look at yourself honestly. Of course the author can write however they want, but I feel like I can always tell if they are trying to talk at me or tell me a story. I personally hate being talked AT, if that makes sense. Tell me with your words and actions and don't spell it out is my type of reading. However, I think comedy makes things a little different. Those types of self inserts are usually pretty funny!

I thought about that "female detective" comment some more and I considered it could have also been a translation thing, but I don't know...it still seems like a backhanded comment either way haha! I know it's just a small thing but still something I noticed as a fan of the series. I agree that Misa is still very much a functioning adult despite her devotion to Light. I know she's young and feels "indebted" to Light, but come on, are you kidding? I have shinigami eyes, a death note, AND I'm a cute model? You better believe I'd be living that shit up lol.

Oh yes, movies that make me cry are a good sign! In fact, if I cry watching anything I automatically deem it as a good movie/show/whatever media it may be. I feel like I rarely cry (unless I'm angry lol) so in a strange way I somewhat enjoy when a story makes me feel that way!

I have been super busy the past two days and am catching up on posts. At least due to my horrendous media literacy, outside of video games, I don't have much to say as I have not seen much almost any of the things you have talked about lol. I will add to the Naruto discussion that at least the older female characters were still pretty strong. Tsunade , Kurenai, and Anko I remember as being really cool as a kid. Although I am appalled by what they have done with Anko now lol. Also the only thing I know about Misa from Death Note is that my friends sister in High School has a statue of her. So the younger generation is still sharing similar experiences to you for better or worse.

I think that may be another reason FMA was one of my favorites growing up. Hiromu is a big idol of mine, and I always thought it was so cool that she was a female manga artist! I know there are others but as a young kid/teen that really meant a lot to me. She also grew up on a farm with cows so that spoke to me too haha! My Mom used to get so irritated at me growing up with manga. I'd usually end up reading it before we even finished the drive home so she'd say, "I just got that for you and you're already done with it" lol. She wasn't mad but you could tell it frustrated her just a bit xD I do remember the later volumes of Death Note taking me a good while to finish. I don't think there's ever been another manga where I had to take a break while reading. Usually I'll finish them in one setting but no, not Death Note. The artwork is amazing though. I always thought the linework was *chief's kiss* Don't even get me started on the cover art! Lastly, don't feel bad about being a boomer because some would say I am too lol.

Haha, yeah- I tend to really enjoy the stuck up, narcissistic type of characters. Aizen from Bleach is another big one for me. Of course those traits in real life are different, but in my fictional anime world my waifus and husbandos are exceptions :P I've had a few friends say they were surprised I rewatched Death Note too. I definitely get why it may be a little boring since the suspense is gone. I've always been the same even when I was young- when I really like something I can just keep watching or reading it over and over lol. I can see your points on Misa. She really was more of a supporting character to help push Light's agenda/success at the end of the day. It is a shame though considering she had so much potential! If she really wanted to she could have just been a better Kira hehe :P I kid of course but the opportunity was there!

alichu

I should watch the anime sometime. I heard it was good.

Kai Zomei

I think I may have passed by that anime on crunchyroll! I haven't seen it though so when I have some time I'll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion seth! :)

alichu

I agree with you Kai, Naruto and Hinata make a much better couple in my opinion. I still very much love Hinata. She was always so awkwardly cute to me, and I loved that she had a crush on Naruto :) Your collection sounds awesome! I didn't even know Mushibugyo had a manga; I've only ever seen the anime which was very unique. Even cooler that you have them in Japanese!

alichu

Woah, that sounds really neat! I've never been to a place like that but I'm sure it's an experience :) I've only eaten at a few fancy places and I always feel like I'm underdressed, so it makes me uncomfortable lol. Still wouldn't stop me from trying one of Gordan's places though! :P

alichu

I do, if a movie can make me feel a strong emotion, then I'm happy, unless that strong emotion is I'm angry that the movie was bad.

Sir Skelington

I think it's sometimes okay to have a character who only exist to support the mc, but I agree that when it's a major character and they still have no motivation or character arc, it becomes annoying that the writer didn't develop them, especially when you know they could've done it if they wanted to. As someone who gets bored easily, I'm very glad that you make what you want and try so many different character types and scenarios, instead of only doing variations of the same thing. Because if there's one thing I can say when I watch your videos is that I'm not bored. That's the reason why I don't fall asleep to your asmr that much lol, is because I wanna see what you do with them. Since the topic of writing was brought up , I'd also like to get your thoughts on self inserts in writing.

Sir Skelington

Damn I actually have opinions on Misa lol, I agree so hard that her potential was slept on! There were so many times where I wanted her to realize how badly Light was using and treating her, causing her to become an antagonist for him. She could have been the greatest threat for Light and there were so many more interesting things they could have done. Her realizing that Light never once cared about her would be doubly crushing for her, since she sees him as both her lover and the avenger of her family, that turn against him could have been amazing. You could argue, “oh that’s her character flaw, she’s too devoted to Light” but I really think they take it to an absurd degree, to the point where it doesn’t even seem logically consistent. Like yeah she’s not a genius like L or Light but she’s still a functioning adult! It leaves Misa feeling like a plot device more than a character sometimes, like she’s there to just give Light a free pass to use Shinigami eyes with no threat to his own life span. I would love to have seen a spin-off in which Misa takes revenge on Light and becomes the new Kira, probably even more powerful cause of the eye deal and twice lengthened life span thanks to Rem and Gelus’ sacrifice. Also I completely missed how weird that phrasing is with L saying, “She’s capable for a female detective” didn’t even notice that! Yeah pointing out that she’s capable “for a female” is a reeaaal weird thing to say and draw attention to specifically haha

I actually remember seeing "The Menu" being advertised in my city for a Nov 8 release in cinemas. Don't remember how it looked, just the title and release date - and that the female lead character is very pretty haha. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I mean- do you still say you "enjoy" a film even if it makes you cry?

14:00 Hey, it's meeeee! Glad you enjoyed the video essay from that total stranger. Such works and essays are key in opening some debates and discussions. It truly sucks how that entire part about Naruto is just... Subpar. The fact that so many male-written mangas show female characters are prizes to be obtained or tools for the male characters and barely ever the reverse. It moreso appears when you read women-written mangas, where it tends to be better-balanced, hence Full Metal Alchemist's dissonance with shonens of that era. 20-30 minutes per manga? Girl, your eyes are FAST! Perhaps it's me being French and buying Eng mangas for their lower cost overall, but it takes me an hour per volume no matter what... I enjoy looking at page layouts a lot and little details in panels. Then again, might just be my boomer-like slowness (I truly am the meme of the old man in a Mega Man game saying he's 30 years old) ... Death Note is long tho yeah, but I'd argue that it gets WORSE as the volumes proceed. Compared V1 with V12 for instance, you will see the differences. The first few chapters have many more interesting layouts and full-page panels, like the scene of Light buying the wood panel for his desk secret pocket space, or Ryuk searching for cameras, the chapter for L's reveal showing him in the dark on the left page, you turn to see a pristine mostly-white page full of detailed background lines... and the scruffiest, most-generic anime guy in the foreground with few details. I shall protect my baby. <3 Now give us a Misa Amane RP :3 Glad to know some of our collective Patreon money is going to books and mangas, sweeeeet! Your bedroom must have the killer nerd corner with shelves full of paper!

Hmm... Light was your big anime crush? That's a bit concerning... I personally kinda hated Light, but like, the good kind of hate because he was such a good villain (Though I also hated him for killing probably my favorite anime character L). Interesting that you were able to rewatch Death Note so much. It's my favorite anime (though it shares the spot with Soul Eater), but I watched it over a decade ago and haven't been able to sit through a full rewatch of it again. It's really just not the same after the first watch due to having none of the suspense after you know what happens. I personally didn't have a problem with Misa. I thought she was a reasonably well-done character considering she was mostly just a plot device to give Light a chance by granting access to a couple extra powers (a shinigami that he could easily manipulate and the shinigami eyes) without having to pay the price for them. She's not really that interesting but I don't know how they could have fixed that because Light, L, and Ryuk just kinda steal the show. I'd agree that Naomi Misora was done dirty though; I remember thinking the episode where she dies was a low point for the series. That's quite the manga collection. I only have 2 complete manga series and pieces from 5 others. I don't have any of the ones that you mentioned though besides 2 volumes of Death Note.

There is this really beautiful manga called Girl From the Other Side. The story is great and the setting and vibes of the world, and world building is honestly awsome. I think you should mabye give thoes a try. If not it has a three episode series on crunchyroll which is also excellent.

From what you said, I think you were pretty fair about the anime women you talked about. I can't say I would be able to write the female Naruto characters any better, but he definitely could've expanded more on the whole cast if he allowed for it. Funny enough, I remember Kishimoto's wife telling him she thought Sakura and Naruto's dynamic felt like theirs, so she seemed to want those two together (I still think Hinata was best for him in the end).I have a bit of a manga shelf myself: I have the Part 1 Naruto manga, Pokemon Adventures up to the HGSS arc, this short series called Waq Waq, a few volumes of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles (a CLAMP series), a couple series by an American comic artist I liked, the Trigun omnibus, and ten volumes of Mushibugyo in Japanese (bought them while in Japan).

The Menu was such a fun watch for me because it reminded me of a bar/restaurant I've eaten at called Faro. It has artsy food and also 'performances' while you eat, which are also very artsy and - for lack of a better term - strange. When I went we saw a bunch of people in all black body suits chanting latin and playing the bongos. That movie was oddly relatable, ignoring the horror aspect of course! I'm pretty sure nobody died when I went
