I hope you're having a wonderful day! I wanted to hop in and talk about something that has been mentioned a few times and asked on occasion about the outfits.
Why can't we mix and match them up?
I wanted to talk a bit about this and was to why it would be pretty difficult for us to switch over to a layered sprite setup at this stage.
In the beginning of Uni's development we had no intention of allowing the player to customize the character, sure it was thought about, but we were working with a $0 budget and we needed to be as efficient as possible in how we spent our money. So we focused on the important stuff, such as writing and getting the primary characters Art and CGs.
Since we weren't going down customized route we used static images for the sprites; which allows for a simple way to change expressions and pop in new characters.
Of course later, we eventually had enough to actually splurge a little bit on extra stuff for you to enjoy, thus the wardrobe came to mind during 0.10.50's development. The outfits use the same static style which makes it easy for us to switch the images around on the fly; however, if we switched to a layered design we would have to basically rewrite every instance the player's sprite appears on screen and the expression changes. As well as programming a new customization interface, and U.I.
This would take a lot of time and valuable resources away from other more important parts of the game that need it more, so for Uni we will not be adding a mix and match setup.
But, for a future game we plan to add a pretty large character customization option. This is planned for our third game, which will come after a short second game.
I wanted to clear that up a bit, any questions you have please leave them in the comments below. Thank you!
