Outfits. Why not mix and match?

I hope you're having a wonderful day! I  wanted to hop in and talk about something that has been mentioned a few times and asked on occasion about the outfits.

Why can't we mix and match them up?

I wanted to talk a bit about this and was to why it would be pretty difficult for us to switch over to a layered sprite setup at this stage.

In the beginning of Uni's development we had no intention of allowing the player to customize the character, sure it was thought about, but we were working with a $0 budget and we needed to be as efficient as possible in how we spent our money. So we focused on the important stuff, such as writing and getting the primary characters Art and CGs.

Since we weren't going down customized route we used static images for the sprites; which allows for a simple way to change expressions and pop in new characters.

Of course later, we eventually had enough to actually splurge a little bit on extra stuff for you to enjoy, thus the wardrobe came to mind during 0.10.50's development. The outfits use the same static style which makes it easy for us to switch the images around on the fly; however, if we switched to a layered design we would have to basically rewrite every instance the player's sprite appears on screen and the expression changes. As well as programming a new customization interface, and U.I.

This would take a lot of time and valuable resources away from other more important parts of the game that need it more, so for Uni we will not be adding a mix and match setup.

But, for a future game we plan to add a pretty large character customization option. This is planned for our third game, which will come after a short second game.

I wanted to clear that up a bit, any questions you have please leave them in the comments below. Thank you!

Outfits. Why not mix and match?

It's just the way you put it in the main post sounds like that last part is what's stopping you, when it would be by far the *easiest* part.

Finding and replacing would be the final step. We would first have to break apart all the outfits, then have a new U.I made for the customization screen, then have it programmed properly. Afterwards would come the part of finding and replacing all the different expressions and sprites with the casual outfit.

Hizor Games

OK, and you say it's that difficult based on what exactly? Because I say it shouldn't be based on the fact that replacing one thing with another in a lot of places is *exactly* what find & replace is *for*. It would take literally *seconds*.

Wild Bill

Who say ''all''? I said mix between two... And yes it's that difficult, it would take a lot of time, time who could be use somewhere else.

Marcmad

Right, because switching to layered sprites would be "unrealistic" but adding in all the possible combinations as static outfits isn't? I don't buy that it would be that difficult to transition over, it would be a simple find & replace job.

Wild Bill

That's a good idea, however, we would quickly run out of space for unique outfits.

Hizor Games

People always ask for unrealistic thing.... You do a excellent work don't change anything. BUT if really peoples want mix and match you could always create sprites who's are mix between two others, the shirt of one with the skirt of one another for example.

Marcmad

Is good to be focus, I will like to se that in uni, but I know its hard to do it in this moment of the game
