Kimby is currently alive and well

I was also a theater kid and a theater major in undergrad. These stories are bringing me back.

So my mom didn't know I smoked. I was in college, but lived at home. A friend of mine was staying with us due to a [bad home situation] we'll call it. She and I would never smoke in the house but always found a reason or made up one to get in the car to run some stupid errand. Half the time, we'd say we were running to the store and mom would give me a damn list. 😄 I think she knew, but was in denial. Also, this was back when you could fill your tank and get some munchies for $20. Gods I miss those days. Anywho, one time we were already pretty ripped and got back home. We thought we were alone and decided to open the window and do another bowl. Mom walked in and caught us red-handed. She was cool though. We rolled up a joint and she told us about her hippie days from the 70s.

In my second year in the Marine Corps I was seeing this guy and we both lived in the barracks. We weren't allowed to be in opposite gender rooms after a certain hour and definitely not in a higher ranking individual's room. Well I decided that I didn't care and needed to "see" him. So I went to his room in the middle of the night. We "saw" each other a few times 😁 and I guess we dozed off. The next thing I know there's pounding at the door and a loud voice saying surprise inspection, everyone muster outside in 5 mins. I panic and start getting dressed. I was in civilian clothes so the plan was to play it off like he had brought someone on base and hope that they just kick me out. So the officer of the day comes by when he's informed of the situation and I refuse to give him my name (which was so hard cuz I was dying inside). He's yelling at the poor young man I was with and all of a sudden I see a female I kinda knew and she says loudly "why is Lance Corporal (name) here?" So now the officer looks at me and demands my ID. I'm screwed. He ended up calling Master Gunny at 4a to come collect me. It was humiliation at its finest. I was punished with intensive physical training for the next week as well as barracks duty for two weeks and am officially red page in military record.

In his first semester in college, my son got caught buying alcohol underage on Halloween weekend his freshman year. I honestly wasn’t mad at him because people do stuff like that all the time, including me when I was in college, but most people just don’t get caught. Idk how but I was lucky enough to have never been caught. He’s heard my college stories, so I would have been a hypocrite had I gotten mad. He was with two other kids, one waited a week to tell his parents and the other waited over 2 months {told them a day before his court date}. My son called me immediately after the police walked away. It actually made me feel like a good parent because he felt comfortable enough to call me.

Oh god I didn’t even think about the fact that there may be listeners who don’t know what super smash bros is 🫣🤣. I am not that old am I? 🫠

Gaslight, gatekeep, battlestar galactica. Or something like that. I love the adlibs of these stories, the dialogue absolutely kills me. I can visualize the room of sincerely apologizing zooted dudes just silently giggling to themselves.

So glad to hear Kimby is still well! Cancer sucks. The only thing I’ve gotten caught doing was playing spin-the-bottle at a church youth group lock-in. Whomever thought locking a bunch of horny repressed teens into a church overnight with a boring (read: safe) movie, pizza, and limited supervision didn’t think things through. A group of friends and I scurried into the top stairwell of the gymnasium (this was a church with a school on premises…lots of places to hide) and played with a glass soda bottle. It was very innocent by all standards. No 7 Minutes In Heaven here. Most of us had signed virginity pledges therefore kissing - especially with possible tongues - might as well have been an orgy by how rebellious it felt. I’ve never forgotten the image of people kissing around me. It was not the all-consuming pleasure I’d seen in movies - the smush lips of Bergman and Bogie in Casablanca or the sexy stuff I saw secretly in Dirty Dancing at a friend’s sleep-over - it was more like guppies looking for food on each others faces. After that, it would be years before kissing had any inherent pleasure value beyond social status. Later in the week, gossip and whispers had us brought before the youth pastor. We all had parents on staff or in church leadership so there were examples to be made of us - but mostly of the girls. Boys would be boys, apparently. Our punishment was being displayed as cautionary tales of the slippery slope of physical temptation. I remember thinking that if I was going to get in trouble for doing something ‘bad’ - it should be for something I enjoyed significantly more.

Thank you for all the stories back <3

The stealing reminds me in an adjacent way of the many MANY traffic cones, campus building signs, etc that would end up in my boyfriend (now husband)’s college house because one or two of those guys COULD NOT leave shit alone when we were all walking home from house parties. My “getting caught” is pretty tame, but the first time I ever had a raging hangover was because I had way too much to drink at a party (I think it was maybe St Patrick’s Day?) during my freshman year of college, which also happened to be the night before my mom was coming to pick me up and bring me home for spring break. I went to college a seven and a half hour drive from home, so, understandably, about 4 hours into the drive my mom asked me if I could take a turn driving. And I had just been rotting away in the passenger seat, head on the glass. I was too much of a rule follower at that point in my life to tell her I had a hangover, but I also knew that me driving was probably not a great idea. So I tried to pass it off as being tired because I had stayed out late with some friends (I had no brain cells to make a better excuse). And my mom is not dumb. She knew I went to parties. So she didn’t say she knew what was up…but I could tell she knew what was up.
