Thoughts on video endings/patron credits

At the moment I no longer plan on having having a long list of patron names displayed at the end of every video, despite what I promised in my now incredibly embarrassing video entitled "Cybershill" where I first pitched this Patreon. In fact one of the very few changes I bothered to make to this Patreon on September 10th was removing the part in the Patron Rewards that specifically mentioned this, so any brand new visitors to this page wouldn't pledge under the assumption they would get to see their name in the credits of every video I make. Allow me to explain my thought process to you.

First of all, maybe this is just me, but the millisecond I get the part of a YouTube video where they start listing off Patron names I immediately click off. Unless you're deliberately baiting viewers to stay by continuing to talk over the credits or including some kind of bonus clip at the very end then even for a content creator I really enjoy I just don't really give a shit about looking at a list of their patrons. I mean do you actually read the credits when you finish a TV show or movie when you're not specifically looking for something?

Frankly it's my personal preference for a video to just end the instant the person is done saying interesting things. I don't even like using an endcard screen on my videos even though I think they're scientifically objectively proven to increase viewer retention, I just don't like the way they look/feel on my videos (plus you can NEVER trust YouTube not to arbitrarily change something about the system later, leaving hundreds of your old videos completely outdated).

Secondly I don't really know how much this matters but when it comes to viewer retention the longer a credits sequence is the worse it affects the overall rating. I'm actually not some kind of YouTube wizard who has any real understanding of the algorithm, I was actually under the impression it stopped favoring daily uploads, I only dumped my videos the way I did because it would have been too much to dump them all on day one. But every little thing helps and not having credits is a slight bump to that retention rating.

That said I did technically promise it and it's possible there are some absolute mad lads who only give me money so they can have the absolute swag moment of pointing out their name in the credits to all their normie loser friends. I understand the appeal, that's why I offered it in the first place, but after seeing your name in the credits the first few times it kind of gets old anyways. I think it would be more fun rather than having your name at the end of every video maybe only the end of special videos, kind of like that big sequence I had at the end of my latest video. And I also plan on fulfilling my patreon promise of making a video that's literally just me going through and reading the names of every patron out loud for my second channel, so it's not like you'll get no acknowledgement.

That said I understand you might feel pressured into agreeing with me because I'm so smart and persuasive and you don't want to look selfish saying "No, I DEMAND my name be in your videos." so I'm going to provide a Strawpoll where you can vote anonymously to tell me your honest feelings on the matter: https://strawpoll.com/huywpcdds

I'm super late to this discussion since I was only able to start pledging very recently, while I personally don't care too much about my name being in the credits or anything like you mentioned earlier you could do a bigger focus on like $20+ patrons and then maybe doing a quicker text dump of the smaller patrons on screen for a few seconds or w/e. I've seen some content creators take that approach and I think that little bit of dedication does actually make some people's days. Ultimately it's up to you though.

You are ceo of swag

You're so smart holy hecc

could there perhaps be another option which describes us being fine with a very special video where you say all our names like you said? Thanks.

I originally got a patreon to support you and get a funny meme name in the credits (I have since changed that funny meme name) and I am totally fine with never seeing those names again.

ill put my cock on the table and say having my name in your videos was part of the reason i became a patron however if you get rid of them i dont mind. id personally prefer if you kept them, but im not gonna be an entitled asshat and unpledge because of it.

Dialga236

"got made fun of" it's just a thank you list, making fun of supporters is what is actually cringe (at least very productive on bizarro earth).

Sunnyfruit

I feel like the credits screen only works well as a short outro, as a break, but that being said, I've never felt more betrayed ecstatically clicking into a 3 min animation with a juicy thumbnail only for a stream unrecognizable text start flooding the screen 20 seconds in and end cards of some bs meme fad superimpose themselves on top after that, completely obfuscating the mid/lower tier patrons. The only enjoyable personalized donation I think is on twitch where they'll write a nice compliment and express their genuine appreciation for their content only to pull the rug from under them and make the most overused distressing superficial insult and ending it by having a coked up Brian the tts man regurgitate the number 7 for the next two and a half minutes and seeing the streamers reaction. Since that level of interaction isn't really apparent on YouTube, I think patrons only want continued production of new content and maybe a few exclusive rewards probably having to do with getting to know the creator better.

Endcards and patron listing is kinda cringe. I've already showed my friends my name in the last video and got made fun of.

I don't know about how everyone else watches videos but personally I think they're useful in providing some sort of a "break" in between episodes. I'm a habitual binge watcher in order to drown out the deafening silence of my lonely existence, so having SOME sort of outro tends to be nice unless they're meant to be watched back-to-back. I agree that "credits" are basically the equivalent of sucking off Patrons though. Scratch that shit.

Baulderan

Is the Cybershill video still up? I would consider taking down that specific video if your changing the Patreon expectations. Maybe just have a new one which is just 13:11 -> 13:14 of your latest video as a clip or whatever. I don't personally care about credits too much

Anders O.H Moberg

"that one sequence is sufficient for basically forever i think." Agreed.

credits are pointless mostly imo, the sequence in the last video was cool but that's cuz it was art. that one sequence is sufficient for basically forever i think. i'm just happy to support you and see new videos once in a while, couldn't care less about credits

Datura

The only point where I found it adequate to list patrons was in your previous video, where you acknowledged the absolute l̶u̶n̶a̶t̶i̶c̶s̶ chads who supported you for 3 years.

same here! it can be super quick! and I wouldn't mind as long as my name is SOMEWHERE. (not saying I pledged just so I can brag about the credits, I just think it would be frickin sweet to see my name on a cyber shell video, its like being an extra in a big movie!!)

Kiezly

i agree with this idea. it satisfys both options.

Kiezly

holy shit the 0% is astounding me rn

June Guts

I prefer the way your videos abruptly end, after you've gone on some crazy tangent. It's one of the charms of your channel, but it was really cool to have a creative credit roll on that last video as a one-off thank you message. God i wish i was still subscribed while you were making that but i unsubbed 2 years ago hahaha

Munkycheez

I rarely stay reading the credits of Youtube videos but sometimes I do, some of the patron names can be pretty creative and it's always nice to see a content creator thanking his supporters whether you're part of it or not, it feels like a power of friendship moment. Unfortunately the magic is often lost when the patron list gets bloated. Now it's not a prerequisite and credits prevent meme endings while spoiling the retention rates. Some of the content creators I follow just thank their supporters in masse probably for the same reasons. But they usually don't have tiers. Now I won't throw the "I give you monies because I love you while not expecting anything back", it's about being a patron, not a simp. So I think WIP info or suggestion polls are the better way to make the patrons feel involved.

Sunnyfruit

I think like unused footage or behind the scenes bloopers would help with end credits I mean I've watched those in movies and such. And when the credits fade in and out when overlayed before the actual video ends. As a idea to retain attention until the end. Just a thought.

Ahegaotv

As much as I enjoyed seeing my name under John Madden's face I really don't fucking care about having my name in your videos. As most people said, I'm just supporting you because I like your content. The only way I'd stick around to see patron name credits is if there was an official Cybershell season 1 ending animation done by Tyson Hesse. Honestly, even if it's just a short patron credits, I don't close the video. I go to a different tab to look at other shit because I really care that little. My point is, you should give the patrons access to your twitter to make one tweet, that'd definitely go over well.

Haruhi-50X

Techmoan is a good example, it adds like an extra five minutes or something. I feel cheated when multiple minutes of a video are just credits

ASBR

Yeah this is another point, I like when the length of the video reflects the actual length of the video y'know, I feel like 3-5 seconds at the end is basically close enough but even something like thirty seconds of patron credits makes me go "ugh, I was hoping for thirty more seconds of actual video." Again not throwing shade at anyone who has a patron scroll, I'm especially cognizant of how it's not something you can easily go back on.

Cybershell

I find the idea of seeing my name in the credits because I supported a youtuber to be absolutely bizarre. Noah Caldwell-Gervais read out his patrons because you can tell that he is a very humble person and wants to truly give thanks but even I think thats too much. I've never seen my name on something and thought "god I feel proud I did that" unless I actually helped with a video. Like Techmoan puts a list at the end of his and its like "so what?" But when he reads out the name of someone who actually helped him, send him a rare cassette or something I think "dude, that's awesome!". Also saying this is like a "movie credits" is not even true, you get a producer and executive producer but its not like you see all the people who gave money to them. All you see "Stephen Spielberg" or "Lionsgate". You don't see "Paul who is a shareholder of lionsgate". You see "Gary the keygrip" because damn, did Gary grip those keys. If Gary wasn't in the credits after those gripped keys, then I would have been pissed.

Novel

I think more content is good so I'm happy with just the monthly stream, seeing my name appear somewhere for giving money makes me feel like a dickhead to be honest.

Just have the names scrolling across the bottom of the screen throughout the entire video, easy. I’d say sack them off. Let the video end on five seconds of your highest tier patron names perhaps. I hate the way Patreon name scrolls artificially lengthen a video. It means that the runtime of the video is basically always wrong

ASBR

Well I'm not seeing any major negative pushback to this so currently I'm leaning towards a heavily reduced patron credit sequence where I briefly show my $20+ patrons' names for a few seconds. But I will allow time for this poll to accrue votes and for more people to see this post, also I will probably end up running another official Patreon Poll about this on another post too because I forgot about that feature lol but for now vote in the strawpoll so I can at least read the room on this situation.

Cybershell

I never stick around for patreon credits, I don't expect you to waste your time editing my name in, and i don't expect people to read it either :)

Goose Footler

I don't care dude I pledged for your content not for some stupid lil 5 second recognition in a video

Nicholas Nava

Hey even if it's a quick frame as a blink and you miss it moment hidden in the video I will find that frame and pat myself on the back for my philanthropy.

Becca

oh right I forgot Patreon has integrated poll features lmao okay well please nobody pass around this poll to random people :^) and I will run it again officially on a later unrelated post

Cybershell

Should probably make it a real patreon poll so no one fucks it up by passing it to random people. Also I voted but I’ll elaborate here. Even a brief screen of text makes me feel better about the support I give channels like Thor High Heels. It don’t need to be fancy. You do what you want though. I have your back either way cause fuck it, I have the means and I like your shit.

GigaBoots

Oh I forgot to say it's possible I may keep the patron credits but only for $20+ patrons and it wouldn't be some long credit sequence it would just be a very quick flash at the end of the video.

Cybershell

I mean I'm pledging because I believe I now legally retain distribution rights to the quote I signed up for.

Becca

i don't care and have never cared, nor do i watch those parts of videos, either. i support creators so they'll make more content. that's pretty much the end of it for me. oh, and since you've been gone Patreon added a poll feature, dunno if you noticed it or not when making this post.

rtil

I don't really think anyone cares that much dude, I pledged because I want to see you make more great stuff and as a thank you for the hours of entertainment you've given us.

I didn't become a patron for recognition. Do it up
