It occured to me Jaster seemed more surprised Wik "could talk" and never how he learned the language. Makes me wonder if there is a perception of mares being on a lower level and unable to speak than simply having their own equally complex way of doing so. More like a talking dog than another linguistic being, if that makes sense

To create a literal language barrier and then give the main character the "wrong" language growing up, and seeking those you can understand is such a genius and poetic way to depict irl struggles with gender. I can't wait to see how much deeper it runs than even this, and how the story will go
