[WRITE-IN] Firelink Episode #59

Hey all! Nick's still out at GDC, so KC, and I are going to be holding down the fort w/ Eric on tonight's episode.

We'll be chatting about some early Assassin's Creed Shadows impressions, the God of War Amazon series showrunner not playing the games, and the 5th (!) anniversary of March 20th, 2020, aka, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal releasing on the same day at the start of the pandemic.

Reply with your questions/comments on any of these topics, or honestly, anything else you want to talk about. Whatever, do what you want, I'm not your parole officer.

Are either of you excited for the upcoming animated release Lazarus? Personally I idolized Watanabe back in the days of Champloo and Bebop and this feels a lot more similar to his older works, so I'm trying to tamper my excitement because I shouldn't let myself get to hyped for something that may end up being disappointing. All that being said, I'm stoked for this and really hope it hits as hard as those classics did years ago.

Steady Goblin Wood

How did you find ACS stealth / enviromental seasons affects? SkillUp mentioned in his review a lot of the way seasons changed what appraoches you take were nullified by the game's ai being too forgiving in sight & hearing range.

Blistered Soul

I don’t think I have a specific question this week. I’m just looking forward to the show as usual.

Inverse Skies

I'm almost done with Wanderstop, and I've found it really interesting that the mechanics are often intentionally tedious and slow. Death Stranding often felt the same to me, and I've enjoyed how both games used that as part of the story experience. Are there other games you've played that have intentionally "bad" mechanics that serve the overall experience of the game in effective ways?

That's pretty well my point too. If it's so much if a moralistic issue, it can be reinterpreted into a satire. Nothing has to be 1:1 with the books or video games either. Halo has plenty of stories beyond the games, and Witcher has a treasure trove of lore outside of Geralt and the Wolf school of Witchers. Anything could be reinterpreted too if it was so morally compromised like Starship Troopers was.

Far Too Many Frogs

Reminds me of Paul Verhoeven making the Starship Troopers movie as a satirical response to the book because he hated how much it endorsed militarism and fascism.

We've had plenty of games unite us in negative ways, such as the disastrous Cyberpunk 2077 launch and the Helldivers 2 region-locking, but Doom and Animal Crossing united us positively. What were your other favorite instances that brought everyone together? First one that comes to mind was Pokemon Go.

Freakjob

A bit off-topic, but did you guys play that short inverse-soulslike game? Where you play as the strong end boss, while the 'hero' keeps coming back, getting better and better? It's only 20 minutes and has surprisingly great writing. It's "the dark queen of mortholme"

Sheepy_Gorilla

The Sarlac of time labeled “Pandemic.”

Are there any games that have hooked you in genres you normally don't get on with? As an example, I've not been big into creature collector RPGs like Pokémon, and yet the (early access) game Beastieball's gotten almost 40 hours of playtime outta me so far.

Mike (R.S.)

5 years since March 20th, 2020?😱🤯Where-where did life go?😆😅

Lil' Cass

Would be curious to hear how you guys combat burnout and keep up a passion for gaming while having it as a job (cut to a montage of the jokes lately on windbreaker about monetizing hobbies as yahtzee has taken up baking). Working as a mechanic pretty much killed my enthusiasm for cars, and its only come back since changing careers and leaving the industry. Are you all just genuinely that into games? Or did it at some point start to feel more like a grind? Any wisdom is appreciated

plz help

Very true. I had that same thought as soon as I posted.

Cameron Gore

They should do that when Nick is around!

Brian S

I felt exactly the same way when Desmond was killed off. I’d say the company should move past the IP, but it makes way too much money for that to ever happen.

Brian S

As a long time fan if the Assassin's Creed games, the series really felt like it lost something after they killed Desomnd in AC 3. Now with them moving completely towards a "Souls Like" combate with RPG dialog (lore breaking grumble grumble) Should they even be making more Assassin's Creed games or just move the tech to a new IP? Going back to basics with Mirage didn't seem to move the needle, can they still bring it back?

Cameron Gore

I have always wondered why showrunners refuse to play games. Saw this with Halo, Saw this with the Witcher (Henry Cavill was its saving grace). Is it some deep seated disdain for video games, be it envy or doubt? Or is it that this is consistent across people trying and failing to adapt stuff from other mediums?

Far Too Many Frogs

And a second question if you guys have time, is there a game that you played at a gaming event like E3, GDC, etc that you didn't like or had no faith in after playing the demo but was surprised by how good the finished product was when it released?

Pixel Grip

Do you think that show runners adapting a video game should have extensive knowledge of the game they're adapting or do you think it's better for them to know only the basics to give a fresher take on the source material that isn't completely bound to that source material?

Pixel Grip

I think it's time for some The Last of Us season 2 speculation don't you?

Ryan Betts

Do you guys agree that Assassin's Creed combat needs totally reimagining? Watching videos of Shadows, and the low lethality combat looks so immersion-ruining. I shouldn't have to plunge my dagger into some shirtless fat guy 25 times to kill him.

ergotpoisoning

Time to trash talk Halo while Nick isn't around to defend it ;)

Ryan Betts

Are either of you Xenoblade people, and if so, are you thinking anout trying Xenoblade X (released today)?
