Let Games Journalists Cook | Cold Take

Comments

I'm all for letting them cook... burning at the stake's generally a form of cooking right?

TwoHeavens. Esq

Glad I'm not the only one who remembers the Scoville Wars, it just predated the Hops Wars where every two-bit dumbass with a brewkit decided "bitter=better." Glad we got past that too.

If I could have anyone narrate my life story, it's Frost

Ben B

Despite some of the comments on here, excellent piece Frost. As with many things, the general public doesn’t really understand the true difficulties and challenges that being a “professional” can bring, doubly so when it’s also at the mercy of needing to give opinions to an increasingly toxic audience. Personally I have a list of potential scandals I like to check on after a week or two to get the actual story from a real news outlet rather than whatever, and then I check a couple I trust, but this is a bit much to expect from everyone unfortunately. That said, the corporations need to re-examine their business model because it’s not doing anyone any favours.

Observe, legitimate criticisms from some dude. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_Zrtq7_RZ4

No, don't let them cook. All they make is garbage anyway. I get that their job is demanding. But there's hundreds of youtube channels of just guys doing games journalism better than games journalists. Also, their fuckin' job is to play video games and talk about it. Don't expect much sympathy for the general public.

Thomas Hoerauf

I definitely mellowed out about games journalists making less than stellar articles when I looked up the job descriptions of a few mainstream outlets and saw that entry level writers were expected to contribute upwards of 20 articles per month (that might need a fact check but I'm pretty sure that was the number for a few places). With those kind of deadlines, I'd definitely phone in a few "Popular game has lost Y percent of their player count" articles to keep myself sane.

James Votypka

VERY well done video, thank you for making it 🙏

Dan McAlister

It is not the job of journalists to shield their readers' feelings or to confirm their biases.

Caerdwyn

I have a bit of a different litmus test for journalists. "What is your take on gamer gate?"

Picblick

I have run out of good will for mainstream games journalism. I don't believe I'm their target audience despite being a casual gamer and it becomes even more apparent with all the junk on the page made to generate links. Even when there is a good article every blue moon, I cannot take the media on its word to be honest and accurate when they fumble coverage, dodge accountability behind a corporation, and closely operate with industry contacts. The news can cry about how I am part of some movement or so on, but I can't be alone in thinking the mainstream journalists and the content farms that employ them had it too easy.

John Smith

you guys are becoming my life support device.
