Hi-Rez CEO Claims Valve Is Overpowered | Cold Take

Comments

I keep reading the title as "CEO claims value is overpowered" and my mind immediately serves me an image of some beancounter complaining that high quality gives games unfair advantage over his shovelware and makes it harder for him to profit, and it worries me how much it still fits

Maciej Myczkowski

Off topic comment: My wife just asked if I'm listening to an Audiobook. You ought to pull a Yahtzee and write then read your own book series. You could make it about a detective trying to unravel a financial scheme.

Gotta say this episode was like a satisfying three course menu. Examining the situation layer for layer. Thinly sliced like carpaccio. A CEO tweeting out statements as rich as cacio e pepe. And for dessert a web of greed and hypocrisy as sweet and sticky as crepe suzette. My compliments to the cook.

Skujat

Every now and then, everything comes together and cooks down just perfectly, the meat's tender and the veggies are soft without turning to liquid, and that turns out to be a true high-rez stew.

"What if they try and hide their collusion from the FTC and somehow pull it off" I don't know. What if Gabe Newell puts a giant laser on the moon and calls it the Alan Parsons Project and holds the world for ransom five years from now. I'm not obligated to account for every outlandish hypothetical out there.

Kez'ral

Yep, and companies NEVER do anything illegal/extralegal if they know they'll never be caught.

Dr. Judge, Private Eye

Agree 100%. No other company has done more for Linux gaming and wider linux adoption imho.

JC

Valve is too dominant in PC gaming, but proton has me team valve for the foreseeable future. Proton allowed me to finally dump windows once and for all, and that alone is enough to keep me in steam.

Grigori Gahan

They've also got no incentive to improve their extremely poorly optimised launchers due to their dominance.

Justin Michael Baard

"What if all the markets grouped up and blackballed PALworld" That's called collusion and it's illegal under the Sherman Act. Old settled law.

Kez'ral

I put magic fairy dust in my cereals every morning!
