In-Game Monetization Keeps Getting Murkier | Cold Take

Comments

Agreed.

The response to this video truly exposes the HD2 fan base as a toxic goop of overly sensitive kids (just like BG3)

A) Frost enjoys the game, never said anywhere he didn't. He just doesn't "love" it. B) This video is about monetization systems in general and not a critique of Helldivers 2 specifically, but using its system, and exploitation as an example. It's not about "how" to farm credits.

Nick Calandra

Frost really needs to stop talking about HD2, in the video a month ago he was just factually wrong about the progression and monetization a couple times, although complaining about randos joining him in the co-op game because he didn't find the friends-only matchmaking option was funny. Now he tells everyone how to do the farming exploit and preemptively defends himself by saying it's not an exploit, except guess what? It's already fixed, it was fixed for a few hours before this video went live. This game's his kryptonite.

You guys are wrong about HD2. It's an actually good game with an excellent monetization scheme. It's not hard to get super credits quickly.

Interesting essay, I guess I fall into the third category, I don't feel I need to purchase or farm super credits for the new warbonds. The equipment in the standard warbond is more than enough to finish Helldive Difficulty and you can easily earn enough SC through playing to eventually get a premium warbond over time.

Love all the PoE 2 footage at the beginning. GGG genuinely has one of the best monetization strategies out there - free-to-play, no content locked behind microtransactions, all microtransactions cosmetic. Stash tabs are the only really essential upgrade you need in order to play endgame, but honestly if you are playing a free-to-play live service game to endgame, paying the few dollars for premium stash tabs that make your endgame inventory a bit more organized is a small price to pay.

Really enjoyed this video essay. I wonder if it would have helped people new to the industry (or even live service) to put this case in context? Seems like there's a pretty good consensus that this version of live service (and this company) are one of "the good ones" (aka a smaller fast food chain or one that maybe pays its workers a decent price?). Either way I'm coming to look forward to new episodes and see where Frost is going next time!
