Fatigued by the Numbers | Cold Take

This week's episode of Cold Take is now available!
Wasn't expecting to see PoE footage on Second Wind! IMO definitely a game that deserves a deep dive of some kind - GGG are doing some really interesting shit from a design perspective that no-one is really talking about aside from people who already play it

An excellent take. Not just related to this video, but I absolutely LOVE how the Second Wind team has been enabled to dig into not just whether they find a game good or not, but the mechanics behind the games. It makes me think about my own play habits and has actually led to me playing a lot more games than I used to because I can better identify the games I'm likely to get engrossed in. Thank you - not just for your excellent work but for re-sparking a beloved pastime for me!

I feel character animation is a better damage indicator than numbers. Like the Jackles in Halo

I'm OK with numbers that have tactical value. I usually leave them enabled when I play. The frustration with numbers (in my mind) is when they don't lead to any decision making by the player. In other words, if the number isn't going to give me the information I need to aim somewhere else, choose a different piece of gear, or change my talent loadout... then why are you showing it to me?

I feel like numbers as an indicator of feedback while shooting are good, but numbers in the options screen are less good. I’m not the only person who saw the first Dark Souls level-up screen and went “what in the spreadsheet is this?” I think theorycrafting and number-crunching aside, feedback in-game is more important than static numbers out of game. If I wanted to spend my gaming session with the game on pause while I look up numbers on wiki pages, I’d do work. The less time that the game makes you waste not playing the game is, for me, better. That’s why I don’t like numbers. And yes, I was an English major.
