They said at the beginning that the radiation levels were nominal, meaning zero. The suits were "just in case". So there was no radiation which she absorbed. The bird was a canary, and I guess those types of bird's health is very fragile, very weak. Like how in coal mines when the air would become too toxic to breathe, the canary would die first and that would let people know they needed to leave the mine immediately. You were asking some VERY interesting questions at the end, questions I wish I had better answers to myself.
