The Big Lebowski Reaction

Comments

It's kind of a parody, yeah. As much an homage as parody, I think. In some ways it's a nonsense movie and nothing happens. But it's also really well-written, with tight plotting; all these little subtle touches pay off later in the movie, you just have to pay attention. You seemed to have missed quite a bit, which is to be expected both because it's your first time watching (and there's just a lot to absorb), plus you are talking through it (reaction video, nature of the beast), and the language/cultural barrier makes it that much more difficult. Overall I'm really satisfied with your reaction; I was worried the aforementioned problems would negatively impact your enjoyment of the movie, but you seemed to appreciate it as much as I could've reasonably hoped. The only other movie by these filmmakers (the Coen brothers) that I'd highly recommend is "Burn After Reading", a movie where truly nothing happens. But it's so fucking funny, I think. (Not laugh out loud funny, for the most part, but a very dry humor.) Although I'm sure a lot of people will recommend "Fargo" (if you haven't already watched it?), which is a good movie too. I'm not a big fan of it, but I appreciate the quality of it. The Coens are really, really talented filmmakers; all of their stuff is really thoughtful, well shot and edited, and always rewarding on re-watches. They're not my favorites (aside from "The Big Lebowski" being top-10), but I appreciate the talent.

This is what’s (correctly) referred to as, “A Hangout Movie.” Just sit back and enjoy the good company of these hilarious characters.

As a duly ordained priest of the Church of the Latter Day Dude (dudeism.com), I am licensed to wed various Dudes and Dudettes. Although I have to admit, man, I haven't because I'm too laid back a dude to do it.

I didn’t really understand this movie this first time I saw it. It takes more watches for things to really sink in. It’s a movie about the characters more so than the plot itself. It’s about friendship and sticking together. There’s some interesting analysis to take from this movie. Every time Walter is angry the Dude is chill, and every time the Dude is worked up Walter is calm. Steve Bushemi, who played Donny, started in the movie Fargo before this (also directed by the Coen brothers). In that movie Steve’s character never shut up, so it’s a funny paradox that Walter is constantly telling him to shut up in this movie, thus having very few lines.

As a lifelong bowler, this is one of my favorite movies. The Dude is so laid back, Walter is a maniac, and Donny is, well...just Donny. I was like a kid in a candy store watching this reaction, it was great! Most of His Dudeness's clothing actually belonged to the actor that played him, Jeff Bridges, including the jelly sandals 🤣. In addition, if you notice Fat Thor's clothing in Endgame, it's very similar to The Dude's. This is no coincidence, it's a tribute to El Duderino. In fact, the scene where Thor is walking into the Avengers complex, beer in hand, Tony Stark walks by him and actually calls him Lebowski.
