2020-10-02 21:15:02 +0000 UTCJohn and Lena were married for 7 months. He was killed on Iwo Jima. Lena was told about his death on her 32nd birthday. Lena never married again. She died when she was in her 80’s, and was buried with her wedding ring. She was truly Semper Fi. Forgot to mention: John Basilone was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his actions on Iwo Jima, which is the second highest honor for a serviceman. He’s the only Marine to have been awarded the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross.
