They didn’t have water for almost 2 days because the metal drums of water they brought ashore was contaminated with fuel. Stupidly, someone decided to use the same drums for water that was previously used for gas. Remember in episode 5, when SNAFU told Sledge and Oswald to scrub the empty drums? They didn’t do a good job and the drums still had gas residue so the water was no good. The Japanese poisoned all the water on the island. Sledge wrote that it was “105 degrees in the shade. We did not fight in the shade.” Men were passing out from dehydration and heat exhaustion. They eventually got water - you must have missed the scene where they were drinking water from their canteens right before they got the pork chops. The island of Peleliu had an airfield which the Japanese would use to launch bombers to bomb the Philippines. MacArthur wanted Peleliu taken to prevent that. Historians would later say it was not necessary. It was a terrible battle. They were told the battle would only last 3 or 4 days. It lasted 73 days. And yes, it did look like Mordor. The island was made of coral. It was so hard they couldn’t dig foxholes or bury the dead so the dead rotted above ground, making it smell terrible and drew many flies and insects.
