Peleliu was terrible because it was dry, temperatures was 105-115F degrees. Sledge wrote, “It was 105F degrees in the shade. We did not fight in the shade.” The Japanese poisoned all the water on the island and the metal drums of water they brought ashore were not cleaned so the water had oil in them. They had to fight for 2 days in the heat without clean water. They were passing out from dehydration and heat exhaustion. As you saw, the invasion was met with fierce resistance by the Japanese who changed their tactics after the failed Banzai attacks. They retreated into the hills and hid in caves where they barraged the Americans with artillery. The Marines had to go to the hills and fight them. Peleliu was made of coral. So the ground was hard and covered with white dust. It was too hard to dig trenches or bury the dead, so the bodies just rotted in the heat, with flies everywhere. It smelled terrible. You will see that the Marines become just as hateful towards the Japanese and resort to cruelty without mercy. It will become more and more dark, psychologically. Looking forward to the next one.
