To answer your question the quiet is a bad sign because it signifies the animals are all gone, meaning either a predator is near, loud bangs have gone off such as gunfire and artillery scaring them away, or in this case you saw why.

Larry, you brought up the atrocities committed by other nations. One thing is how Japan didn’t get the same stigma Germany did, and the Japanese committed terrible atrocities against civilians. In The Pacific, you will see how the Japanese fought without any restraint by the Geneva Conventions, while most Germans (except for the SS and Nazi fanatics) adhered to the rules of warfare. Looking forward to the last episode- it was a great journey with you both!
