June 2016 QnA post

Hello everyone!

Thought I'd throw up a quick question and answer post like I did a few months ago. If you have any outstanding questions about the comic, print (!), the creative process, the story, etc, please throw them up here and I'd love to answer them. We're getting close to the end of the second book and onto the third, which means we're just about a third of the way through the entire comic!

It was her being stupid and brave. Which sums her character up pretty well I think

ABBADON

When Allison stood up in front of Motom, was that he being dumb, or was her key somehow physically preventing her from submitting?

Psi Operator

Are the author's comment stories things people tell each other in the KSBD multiverse? Or stories in a similar narrative space? Either way love both the comic and those. Can't wait for the conclusion to Aesma's story.

Zim

It's Allison's prophetic name (or possibly her boyfriend's, if you believe the prophecy). There's a bunch more names the Rising King will have whose pattern should become pretty apparent in like 2 pages

ABBADON

Is it possible that 6 Billion Demons is actually the name of an angel Alison has to kill? IE the sixth incarnation of an angel named Billion Demons.

Psi Operator

Reading about esoteric Buddhism and Hindu mythology mostly. Eastern religion and philosophy contains some interesting concepts, as does a lot of old school Abrahamic religion. I haven't properly studied religion but I'd like to (not religious myself in the slightest). I also find a lot of mythology in general, be it Greek, Christian, or Chinese, is super interesting because it's often a very condensed, boiled down version of mankind's oldest stories

ABBADON

I can't specifically say, only that it probably follows a timeline reasonably around the same time as antiquity to the modern era (so the golden age was 2 or 3 millenia in the past)

ABBADON

So Allison just intuitively knows how to use Division?

Psi Operator

Your mythos is intricate and beautiful, the pages containing the creation story and some of my favorite parts. How did you come up with your mythologies?

DH

What is the general timeline of the Demiurge era? Like how many years separated the Golden Age from the Universal War? And how long did the Second Cinquest last before turning to war?

I maybe should have made this more clear, but generally by reaching insight or breakthroughs into different aspects of themselves and their 'true' names. Sometimes this is by chance, sometimes by active effort, and sometimes by tricking people into giving it to them

ABBADON

Character? I think that one's obvious.

ABBADON

She immediately came back. But Zoss will show up again in a couple of pages, it's going to be a thing.

ABBADON

Good question. I'd say about 30 min to sketch, 2+ hours to ink, 3+ hours to color. That's on the low end though. Pages usually take about 8-10 hours to complete.

ABBADON

I definitely have gotten better and faster at making comic pages the longer I've done it. Honestly the best advice I can give you is just to draw a ton more, and like any skill it will improve. More specifically, I would also encourage you when you're working to be aware of your own creative process and judge whether you're refining your method. I've got drawing comic pages down to a very specific set of steps/strategies that helps me save time and reduces tedium. I may detail it in the near future when I do a panel tutorial.

ABBADON

I layout really heavily by intuition and I wish I actually paid more attention to it. I've been trying to vary it up a bit and experiment with panel borders, etc, but it's generally something I wish I paid more attention to. I love Mike Mignola's art and I'm flattered to be compared to him. I think I generally divide the page into vertical thirds when I start laying it out and go from there.

ABBADON

I write at a very broad and general level, then fill in as needed. I have a huge outline basically of how the whole story should progress, and when I get to specific parts I have particular moments/scenes in mind that I'll flesh out as I go. I definitely have a strong sense of what themes/ideas drive the comic and I think that drives it at the high level. I wish I had developed my characters more before diving into it, because it's led to a weird lack of characterization on Allison's behalf and some other wonky stuff, but I generally think it's come out ok and hindsight is 20/20 I guess

ABBADON

how does a demon lose names to become more powerful?

Who is your favorite?

verxes

is there a missing chunk of time we haven't seen yet where Zoss and Allison talk some more, or did she immediately teleport back home after he Late Title Card'd her? If there was a longer conversation between them, will it appear in the comic later?

Indie Winter

Did you always draw/color so fast? Any tips to not be so precious about the work to get it done?

Dan Hale

How long does it take you to 1. sketch a page 2. ink a page 3. color a page ? Thanks!

William Kennedy

Are you a fan of the art/comics of Mike Mignola? Hellboy in particular, but I'm more interested in whether your layout design was influenced by his style at all.

Ben Klug

How do you personally go about scripting? Do you try to do a whole book at a time or do you just script in batches?
