Some misconceptions about the $50 tier rewards...

Hey everyone!

So I've been seeing comments (and received a few emails) about the $50 tier rewards; more specifically the "merch design suggestion" reward. I know I probably phrased it in a misleading way in my video, so I'm going to be clearing up some things in this post.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. You're asking people for merch designs and ONLY giving them a shoutout?

A. NO; there are two outcomes for the rewards depending on what you "suggest". If you are an artist and actually submit a finished artwork design that you would want in my merch store, you are 100% going to be compensated for it monetarily. Of course you will get a shoutout, but I will also be directly messaging you to discuss sale shares and pricing on your design. I will not be taking all of the profit off of your design, and we can discuss how much you would like to be compensated. However, if you merely suggest a design (i.e. "I think some kind of design with *insert anime here* would be cool!") without any kind of artwork/concept art presented to me, then you will only receive a shoutout for suggesting the design as most of the work in drawing and creating the actual design will be up to me and my artist.

Think of it like if you were to suggest a video idea to me; even though you gave me the idea, most of the work in researching the topic, writing the script, creating the video and editing it will be up to me and my editor. However, if someone were to make a video for me to put on my channel (e.g. an animation), then I would obviously pay you for the troubles because you made the video. It's the exact same in this instance too.

Q. What if we submit merch designs that you don't accept?

A. Any and all merch designs, whether they are accepted or not, will be given a shoutout on my social media. So even if you don't get your design made into merch, it's a great opportunity to pimp out your own social media/artworks to a large audience.

Q. If my design gets chosen, do I get compensated one-time? Or can I ask to get a percentage of the sales for that design?

A. That is completely up to you! Again, if your design gets chosen, this will be something you and I will discuss privately before we launch the design.

Again, sorry for the weird phrasing and misleading description. I know a lot of people were very confused with this particular tier reward and I should have said it in a much clearer way. Just know that I would NEVER claim another persons work as my own, especially from loyal and dedicated Patrons like you.

If you have any other questions or concerns surrounding this, then please feel free to let me know in the comments below!

Thanks everyone, and have a wonderful day :)

Him being flooded by amateur artists doesn't seem like that big of a deal, especially since he really only has to take a second or two to see if it's something they'd like to use or not. If it was an essay contest or something that required devoting a lot of time to each entry I'd understand your logic @firat but it's just photos

And another thing that's unfair to the artist is people who want them to do things "for the exposure" which is essentially what you're offering them if they submit a design you don't want to use. And you aren't just having them do it for the exposure, you're making them pay you for the chance to even get the exposure. It's just really bizarre especially with as expensive as this tier is

yes, that´´ is surely something to consider. an artist is usually struggling to make a living or increase his income - in order for you to consider / guarantee him giving a shoutout or the opportunity to get a merch-deal, its weird that he would need to pay you 50$ to be considered at all - i totally get that viewpoint. on the other hand, there are probably 1000x more amateurs out there, who consider themselves "artists" who would flood you with suggestions if you made it public. however, this is patreon, so it is not public and only people who do sponsor you (even if its just a few bucks), may be motivated to develop something for you and your merch store. in the end, its your channel, your rules. but definitely something to consider imho.

I'm a student and can't afford 50$ per month..

alright! thanks for the fast reply ^w^b

I think the main thing that people are questioning is that they essentially have to pay you for you to consider their design at all, when it's usually the other way around? (Not just pay you, pay you at least 50$.) And even if the reward ultimately pays for itself (ex. after c amount of time of them paying you 50$ you accept their design and end up making c times the amount in sales) it's just super weird considering there's no guarantee you'll accept their design (and again, they have to pay you in the first place to even get the opportunity) I don't know, that's just my opinion. I think people would much rather you hold public contests for stuff like this, so even if you want to keep this reward tier at least you'll make it accessible to artists who can't afford it.
