What's a "色紙"?

This is "色紙".

The illustrations vary from elaborate full-color ones to simple ones written in a short time, but they are drawn in handwriting.

色紙 translates directly into English as "colored paper," but it is actually quite different.

It is a culture unique to Japan, so it cannot be directly translated.

Originally, 色紙 was a special paper used for Japanese calligraphy, consisting of a thick sheet of paper covered with Japanese paper.

色紙 has a square appearance, is very strong, and is also surrounded by gold leaf, which makes it look very good, so it was used to get famous people to write their autographs.

Eventually, famous illustrators began to draw illustrations instead of signatures.

As time went on, the act of having an artist draw a picture on a piece of colored paper itself came to be called “色紙".

In other words, the Japanese meaning of the phrase "I'll draw you a 色紙." is "I'll create a hand-drawn illustration board for you.
