That hunk of a computer was the Macintosh Portable by Apple. 16lbs (7.3kg) laptop which in today:s money had a base price of "only" $18,500 :-). 1MB RAM and 40MB storage.

After seeing so many episodes of The X-Files, it was fun going back and seeing David Duchovny playing a government agent in Twin Peaks, a show which was very influential on The X-Files.

Considering that the show was made in 1989/1990 etc, I think Denise is a pretty rad trans-rep. There weren't really any characters in media like this that weren't treated as a joke or super weird. Now, some of the small details (such as Hawk saying 'him' when he made his joke, etc) would be considered slightly offensive by today's standards, but with some nuance I think overall they treat the character with a lot of respect. She's not treated as a complete punchline or freakshow or anything, and the 'dated' parts of the portrayal aren't being done in mean spirits. As for your question, I think 'transvestite' was a common term in that era for any 'trans' person, etc. I could be wrong, but nowadays I believe it's mostly a deragotory term? The point being, I believe we're supposed to interpret what Denise said as "I'm a transwoman" in today's terms.
