Production Notebook - 1/6/21
Added 2021-01-06 11:01:00 +0000 UTCThis character (above) used to be named Skull-Zar, he used to be taller, he used to have longer legs and bigger feet and his skeleton head used to look more like a traditional skeleton. He used to wear something that looked more like overalls and then a mechanic's jumpsuit - but with a medieval twist - and none of this was "right". Skull-Zar didn't "work" for me. I had a lot of little ideas that were correct by themselves, but did not work together.
But I put Skull-Zar away and started working on his peers, and they for a long time they didn't "work" either - and some of them still don't, but over time a few of them closer and better. And then I forced myself to sit and down and take another pass on Skull-Zar again (by this time he had a new name) and while drawing I suddenly had the idea to give his body an apple shape to contrast the other characters and suddenly all those little ideas that didn't work clicked together. And then the design began to influence the character's narrative - his attitude, his back story, his relationship to the other characters.
And you know what, in two months I could be writing about how much the above design sucks, but that's okay because I can't wait to see what the "better" version will turn out to be.
