Well it turns out I'm going to have to put some overtime into this one. My plan is still to combine this with the Harley pic I did a couple weeks back to make one big wallpaper, but when I put these two together, my background choice here against the two characters at once made things busy and hard to look at. Last thing you want for a desktop wallpaper. So expect the full combined version sometime in the next couple of weeks when I can put aside some time to make a decent background for it. Meanwhile, let's talk about Mr. Freeze.
This is a very well known story for Batman fans, but I'll recap it quickly: once upon a time Mr. Freeze was just a mad scientist with a "cold" theme. One of many in DC's roster, actually. I can only guess that during the golden age of comics, there was at least one writer with a problem, and that problem was that he just had too many wicked clever ice puns to share with the world. How many cold-based supervillains would it take to satiate their need to disperse their massive archive of frosty dad jokes? The answer was more than three, but that's beside the point.
The point is, that was Mr. Freeze before Batman The Animated Series came along in the 90's and re-imagined him as a tragic character with a compelling backstory. The new take was so popular that it was ret-conned into the official comics soon after.
If it hasn't already, that's what I hope will happen with Poison Ivy, because the version of her in the Harley Quinn animated series is my favorite.
My memory of classic Ivy was pretty simple: likes plants, hates people, and considers herself rather delusionally to be mother nature incarnate. Nothing wrong with that, really. But what makes Ivy interesting in the new cartoon to me is that it delves a little more into why she likes plants more than people. I took it as her having a form of extreme social anxiety, which is a lot more relatable than I'd seen her presented in the past. This snarky, embittered Ivy won me over with a line where a talk show host calls her a super villain, and she responds with "I actually identify as an eco-terrorist." Love it. Not for everyone, I'm sure, but this version of her really works for me.
So this is where I ask you guys to fill me in on what she's like in the comics these days. Has this version already been done ages ago in the comics or other media, and I'm only just learning about it from the cartoon? I'm very curious as to the state of modern Ivy, and I hope you guys like the pin up!
